I was recently listening to some of my old Merle Travis recordings, ca. 1950s. The tune "Sweet Temptation" has a steel break in it that sounds like an E-13th tuning.?? Does someone know who played steel on Merle's recordings in the 1950s?

Don't know who played steel w/ him in the 50's but,I have an album by Merle,("Travis" Capitol records # ST 1664) that features Curly Chalker on that song. (circa,late 60's-early 70's)

| Jody is right. Noel played mostly on an A6 tuning (similar to the modern C6 without pedals) but, as I recall, he had the old "C#min7" tuning on one neck -- which was actually an E6 with the second string raised from a B note to a 6th or C#. Jody, correct me if I'm wrong. |

Hate to be a wise @$$ and drop a bomb on Roy and Jody, two of the youngest old men among us but the steel player on the original version of Sweet Temptation is Phil Marx. Me myself, I'm too young to know it, I read it in the book so it must be true 
Actually Jody is correct too, Noel played on many Travis' sessions in the 40's, as did Joaquin Murphy, Pete Martinez and Speedy West in addition to Marx. Dickie Stubbs, Leodie Jackson and Speedy played on most 50's sessions, but there was a session with Freddie Tavares on steel too! | I must be as old as some of you guys in on this one, but I didn't have a clue who it was playing with Merle. I had those oldies on 78s in the 40s and some time within the last year or so someone gave me a copy of those same tunes with Chalker on them. How really nice! I could usually tell it was Boggs when he was playing his trade mark A6th style, or thought I could, but I didn't know about the other necks? You can learn something on this forum every day! Great! I believe Merle did most of his recordings in California, so I did think about Noel while listening to these songs. The steel parts just didn't sound like Noel Boggs to me. I wasn't aware that so many steel players recorded with Merle over the years.

Speedy West did many of Merle's things. Speedy also appeared in some ols ki-a-scopes
Merle did.
Merle use to sub for Speedy on the old KXLA radio show from the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, CA. when speedy had recording dates.

Phil Marx played on many Capitol recordings in the mid 40s. Wesley Tuttle used him on many sessions, as did Tex Ritter and more at that time.
In the Merle Travis Boxset, on Bear Family they of course list all the musicians, Merle always used one of the top steel guitar players at all times. The best used the best. Enjoy. Al Johnson |
