Scotty, I am guessing "Drill Rod". It comes in common dimensions. You can look the dimensions of drill rod up on Google. At Hilton Electronics when we want a round length of metal, and draw up engineering print, we specify drill rod. The last time we did that, was in our new Pro Guitar pedal for the hinge tensioning mechanism. Most full line hardware stores carry drill rod. Hope this information helps. |

If you buy welding rod, which is cheap enough, it comes in diameters of different sizes. I use 3/32" diameter stainless welding rod when making rods for my Carter. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . MSA and Dekley used stainless welding rod. Your Mullen would have used a smaller aluminum rod, but I don't recall the size (3/32?)
I don't recall what you have besides Mullen and Dekley (I thought I was doing good remembering two of them). Duh, it says JCH in your sig. They'll be aluminum and smaller than 1/8. If nobody answers shortly, I'd just take a rod to O'Reilly and they'll put their micrometer to it. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Sorry Scotty, I think I am wrong. Drill rod will rust, so you don't want that. The stainless steel welding rod sounds like the stuff you need. Might have to go to a welding supply to get it. |

I bought it, fairly cheaply, through Amazon. You get it quick, for not much money, and you don't have to leave the house. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . In an all-pull guitar, the pedal tuning is managed by the length of the pull rods, so using aluminum for pull rods probably isn't a good idea, especially on the E9th, where rods are normally longer. You see, aluminum expands and contracts about three times as much as stainless steel with temperature changes, and will therefore offer less stable tuning than stainless steel when exposed to any temperature changes.
Something to think about, anyway. |

I agree with Donny. I would only use stainless myself. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

The Emmmons company used a material called nickel-ply for many years. It had a brighter finish and was easier to cut threads. When this became unavailable we changed to stainless welding rod. I believe the LeGrande's used 3/32" and original's used 1/8". Same material, different size, also used for pedal rods. The original pedal rods were of a larger diameter than the later models and the hook was cut down before bending and the threads were roll-threaded 10-32 with a die chaser. Eventually had to change to welding rod, smaller diameter and used a cut thread of 8-32. |

my old zum has pull rods that are very light, dull and soft so i figure they are aluminum. never had a tuning problem in 30 years. temps range from over 100 to under freezing in my picking area. |

Most factory rods are Stainless Steel of some type. I order Stainless Rod Stock from Fasten-All at our local store.. They have all sizes including the 7/64 inch used on Emmons steels. Tell them what length you want. It comes standard in 20 foot lengths. Very high shipping cost. I have them to cut the rods into 36 inch lengths which gives you a cheaper packing and shipping rate. 5-40 threads are the size thread I use fore more precise tuning. |

Stainless steel rod, can be bought at Grainger, MSC, McMaster Carr (where I got my batch). Get the right diameter for the thread you intend to cut on the end of it. Fairly inexpensive. _________________ Lawyers are done: Emmons SD-10, 3 Dekleys including a D10, NV400, and lots of effects units to cover my clams... |
