Knee levers have a lot of "play" in them as in where the pin goes thru the actual lever and secures it to the bracket...just really loose feeling.i've had other steels that had the same problem but it just wasn't quite as bad.any fix???drill it out & replace with next size pin??? just a little annoying, don't think it's in danger of falling off or anything like that, just a little worrisome. |

What kind of guitar. On my Carter, the LKL and LKR are loose. It is not a problem, but like you say, it's a little annoying. But, it would be more annoying if I had to remove the lever and bracket and drill out the pin, then insert a new one. The next size up would probably not fit without drilling the hole out a bit. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I think he's talking about the magnum pro select.
Those knee levers are a little floppy. I tried
Sqeezing the top of the knee lever with a big vice grips. Couldn't budge it. It's just held in by a
little pin, but I don't think they'll ever break.

If you want to give resistance to a joint like that, try squeezing a small bit of paper into the gap between the two pieces _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Yep Lee,that'd be the one...I've had floppy knees on some really nice Sho-Buds & other guitars too.some of them had a screw instead of the pin & I was able to come up with a shim of some sort, sand down an already thin nylon washer or something...this I couldn't come up with anything & was afraid to try the vise grips or anything like that.Otherwise,i'm really startin to like this guitar.it's comfortable to me.it's what I have right now.when finances allow, there'll be another Emmons, but I do like this guitar...well....I guess I could actually say that I love it.i would like to replace the George L with a single coil of some type,Emmons,TrueTone....any ideas from other Magnum owners as to what would sound good,i'd love to hear your opinion.i just really like that single coil tone...but,after almost a month(this coming Sunday,i believe)I'm really getting more & more @ home with it.

A drop or 2 of blue Loctite on the pin ends will firm things up and will last for months.
Apply as necessary.

While I'm thinking of it, a drop or so in the fork where the pin is. Just let it set over night.
This fix was recommended for a flopping vertical on my Carter. Worked like a champ.
Repeat every 3-6 mos, depending how often the guitar is cased & uncased.
cheers

I too, thank you Howard. I have two
carter S-10s that the vertical levers are waaay too loose on. I wonder if the Loctite would work on slippery leg tubes? I have that problem, also. -Jake- |

I think there is an easy fix for slipping leg clutches although I have not faced that issue myself. Search the forum or start a new topic/subject and someone will come to your aid.
I don't recall who first suggested the Loctite but it works so...well!
That vertical was driving me crazy.

My Franklin came with a screw and lock nut on the knee levers. The guitar is almost 33 years old and the knee levers are still tight. |

When they manufactured these guitars they were trying to keep costs down. I think I remember seeing an SD-10 sell for new about $2295.00 on Musicians friend about 2010. Still worth about $1500 now. Not bad for an instrument with floppy knee levers. I like Howards Idea, cheap fix. I fix mine by taking out the inside tube and inserting a piece of a wooden dowel which I've pre cut to just the right length. Put evrything back together, and it can't possibly slip. Of course, I leave one rear leg as is, so I can adjust it for leveling. Tommy..... |
