I just completed a new little keyless lapsteel.
My own design keyless tuners work great and hold tune perfectly.

I have lots of fretboard design options...

Strings thru body (oak) adds sustain, and it is surprising loud unpluged!

Right now I am using a "student" fretboard, with chord names

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Stew-Mac Sells the Chrome Eyelets for those string exits, a nice easy way to make this even more cleaner.

Dom, I'd like to see how you made the keyless tuner! What scale is that? After flying with my 10 string lapsteel(carry-on in gigbag) I had the idea of making one very much like yours..JS

The scale length is 22.5" and the overall length is about 24.5" I will add some details of the tuners to the thread later.

Here is a drawing of my tuner design,
It is just 3/8" keystock cut to 1" drilled, tapped, filed with a string groove. And 10-24 socket head screws.

The stainless steel bolts are kinda expensive... so I am going to use some cheaper screws next time. Brass or aluminum barstock could be used and would be easier to tap.

The bridge peices slide easily on the un-threaded portion of the bolt shaft, but I may try a screw that is threaded all the way to see if that makes any difference. Winking

Great job Dom! I like the tuners being on the bridge end. The one I made with "Sonny Jenkins" tuners is also loud unplugged. Mine has a Maple body. If you support it on your fingertips and have someone strum across the strings you can feel the vibrations for an unbelievable period of time. P.S. Your workbench is beginning to look like mine. Awesome Dom! Thanks for posting how you made those keyless tuners, I just might have to try that.
How do you make your fretboards?

I make the fretboards with Auto pinstripe tape and then laminate it at Kinkos.
I lay out the frets using an online fretboard calculator and a large set of calipers and steel rule.

Dom, how much more difficult is it to saw, drill and tap the key stock than it is to work with mild steel? I'm thinking of a similar project and I've got some key stock, but I'll take it back and look for something else if it's a real PITA to work with. Thanks for your opinion.

key stock is not hard to work with, it's just steel of some kind. I was just compairing it to brass or aluminum which would be much softer.

I worry that aluminum threads would weaken after time and the tuning screws would come loose and slip?
