my set-up?

Hi! I have a Carter Starter Guitar with a Peavey Nashville 1000. So I feel like my steel may be a little inferior and my amp is a little too much. Use a Dunlop High Gain Volume Pedal (know not best). I am just beginning. Am I okay learning with this set up or will I need to upgrade my steel to get a better sound? Any thoughts?

I have no idea what chords I am using. How can you tell if need to replace or get better chords? Are there chords made specifically to handle demands of pedal steel? Average cost? Any thoughts?

You have a better setup than most... Learn to play 1st, worry about the equipment later...

As for cables, I recommend George L's. Their cables are a solderless "make-your-own" kind of thing. You buy the ends and cable by the foot and put it together yourself, or you can buy premade kits. Their cables are a bit more expensive, but they have had excellent reviews for sound quality... and the best part for me is that when the cable starts to crackle because of a loose end, you can cut off half an inch and re-do the connection. I teach guitar in my local hometown here. I currently have 38 students weekly, so my cables got beat up pretty fast and I was always having to buy new cables every 6 months or so. A few years ago I bought a couple George L's cables and have been using the same ones since. Then when I started playing pedal steel, I bought a few more cables because I know they'll last me the next 25 years. Good customer service as well! ...PS.
