I have a friend who is just beginning lap steel and might be interested in some skype lessons. Who do you guys recommend ?

I'll second and third that. John is very approachable and a wonderful guy to work with. He's not only a great player, but also a terrific teacher.

He is not on skype but Lessons with troy is great for beginners.

John Ely on Skype and Troy with some solid video's on C6 lap -- both are good. I've used both myself and recommend them. (FWIW)

Hi - I recommend Mike Neer. I have studied with him. He is a great musician that has a passion for lap steel.

If you have more than a passing interest in Hawaiian steel, I heartedly recomment Alan Akaka. Alan was one of Jerry Byrd's prime students, and you'll learn "touch and tone" ala Byrd from him. His school is "Ke Kula Mele" (The Music School) - http://www.kekulamele.com/.
