He announces her name before her first solo, but I can't make it out.
Bonus points if you know what brand guitar she's playing - and is that a "boo-wah" button she's using in her second solo? |

The woman's name is Marion Hall, and it looks like a Bigsby guitar that she is playing. Hope that answers the question. Great video, with some great talent. Joe is one of my favorite players, as is any steel player.
Don't know if you knew this or not, but Joe Maphis was hired by Ozzie Nelson to play behind his son Ricky on his first recordings, before James Burton took over.

Marion is the male version. She was Marian.
But you spell her playing as AWESOME. |

Is it possible that you're referring to the rapid DOUBLE PUMP of the volume pedal used by many of Hank Thompson's steel players for 'a signature' sound and/or Speedy West?
I saw nothing to indicate the use of ANY KIND of device.......? |

Watch her right leg when she does the effect. You can see that she is operating a floor pedal. |

In case no one has seen it there is Byrd backing up Connie Smith on the Bobby Lord show. He does the intro, fills, and turnaround. cc |

Ray, I wasn't sure if she did something with her right hand/arm around 2:21 and 2:26, but apparently she does that movement when she's using the volume pedal. In the Cindy Cashdollar interview in Vintage Guitar magazine Marian said she used a volume/wah pedal, so maybe the "wah" part is what I was hearing.

What type of amp and volume pedal did you use?
I have a Bigsby volume pedal, and the tread is all worn away on the lower right-hand corner! They have that left-to-right movement for the bass and treble and "wah" attack. They're great. |
Oh, the stuff I learn when watching the masters! |

Another gem from the interview:

played with a thumbpick and three fingerpicks. You can get four solid notes like that, the root, third, fifth and sixth for example. I liked being able to get different intervals, like moving the third up an octave higher. I really recommend wearing three fingerpicks if you want to get interesting chords. |
