I recently purchased a 1940's Ricky B6 bakelite lap steel, and I want to tune it to A6. Does anyone know what string gages to use? Also, I would like to be able to switch between A6 & E13 tunings. It seems possible, because 2 strings would be the same, and the rest would only be a half or whole step apart. From high to low, A6- C#EF#AC#E E13-DF#G#BC#E Thanks, Jim

WHY NOT go to the Jerry Byrd Fan Club site and check out what JERRY BYRD used. He regularly tuned up and down for various tunings, depending on what song he was planning on playing. That small amount of change should not be significant and would not adversely affect your stings.
I'm still using the Spanish Guitar string set-up Jerry Byrd used back in the 1950's.
Works great for all of my needs. |

I can't find Jerry Byrd's string gauges anywhere on your site, Ray.
Here are the gauges I would use, Jim:
A6 E13
---- -----
E E .015p
C# C# .018p
A B .020p
F# G# .024w
E F# .028w
C# D .034w
You can assemble a set like this from the Singles Page of the Forum catalog.

The gauges that Bobby Lee printed out above would work real good for both tunings, as I remember in the old days...al
