I know the feeling, kinda like back in 1967 when I bought a Stratocaster for $167.00 which I've lately seen go for around $7500.00
To quote Dr. Smith from the Lost In Space TV series "Oh the pain". |

I'm sure you've got plenty of company here. Probably my dumbest move was trading a black face twin for a Peavey Austin 400. The first amp I owned was a Black face Vibroverb. I could've bought a paisley Tele for 175.00 but thought it was too sissy. I probably would have stripped the finish anyway, though. It's too embarassing to tell any more. |

I dunno Robert, i traded wifes 4 times, not sure if i got the best end of the deal on all four or not. I would like to think i did better each time, lost track. But seems ironic, i now am not married, haven't been married since the early 80's. So perhaps trading steels and things, are a lot like trading wifes. You keep trading steels till you find one you finally like, then you lose it, or it gets stolen, same with a wife..... life is kinda funny i guess. |

I sold my Fender '58 Strat in 1968 for a '68 Country Gentleman and then sold that for my '79 Gibson Les Paul Custom.
This one I still have.

well , I got to thinking about 1 trade which started back around 68 and still has legs...
1964 Gibson ES335, mentioned above...Red with Bigsby, paid $175 for it from a friend around 70 or so... Traded it to another friend a year later for his SG, then traded the SG for a 69 Tele, played and kept that particular Tele for over 20 years, traded it in the early 90's for a NEW Hartke Bass system 350 watt with 2 / 4x10 cabs, played that rig until around 2002, sold it and with THAT money bought a 1995 Carter D10 from a forum member, traded that 8+5 Carter D10 about 2 years later for another 9+8 Carter D10 (a 1996) with my friend Joe Smith ( also a forum member) here in Charlotte, added a few dollars to get that Steel. Sold that Steel a year or so later and with THAT money bought a 2004 Carter 9+8 D10 from another forum member last Nov.
So, that ES335 trade still has legs, and my friend who I traded it with still has it, but it got severely damaged somewhere along the way and although it is a fully functional and great playing guitar it has very little value.

I never traded anything, but I sold a lot of stuff 'cheap' in years past. I regret most of it now. Who knew?
Here's part of my list...
1959 Fender Telecaster
1962 Fender Telecaster
1961 Gibson ES-330
1959 Fender tweed Deluxe amp
1964 Fender Vibroverb amp blackface
1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb amp blackface
3 or 4 Fender Stringmasters
1975 Sho-Bud Lloyd Green
1960s Maestro Echoplex
1939 Gibson EH-185 lap steel
Emmons "String Machine" (rare effects box with 3 fuzz tones, and 3 pickups).
...and a lot of other stuff, including about 20 lap steels and about 20 tube amps: Standel, Twin Reverb, Super Reverb, 3 tweed Champs, Gibsons, too much stuff to remember. I sold the stuff for market value at the time, but I had no idea that some of these things would skyrocket in value. It's not just the money... I miss playing this old gear.
The good news: I have learned my lesson! In recent years I have purchased a few nice vintage guitars and amps that I will keep for many years to come. Live and learn. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

Don't dwell on it too much-It's all "water under the bridge" now-I've owned dozens-probably several hundred nice guitars-you can't keep them all-you cant take them when you go-and most of us can only play one at a time-PW |
