Topic: Best Dobro around $600 and Best Pickup System |

I just got a used Regal Black Lightning and like the deep, brown tone but I'm new to Dobro so don't know what to look for...any recommendations, PICTURES of yours?
And need to amplify it...been looking at the Schatten pups...any good solutions?
Again, I'm new so don't know the difference in terms like Quarterman, etc.
Also I'm in Southern California...any good resonator stores around? ...don't know of any.

The Regal Black Lightning is a fine guitar. In the $600 USD price range, most people seem to think the Gold Tone Beard guitars are the best value. I bought a used Wechter Scheerhorn in that same price range and have been very happy with it.
I haven't found a pickup yet that I like on resonator guitar, but I haven't done a lot of searching. Search previous discussions on this forum (and in the Electronics section) to see what others have recommended.
Probably the closest thing to a Dobro® store is McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. You might find something at the Folk Music Center in Claremont (it's owned by Ben Harper, and they usually have a few slidey instruments lying around).

World of Strings, 7th st, Long Beach is a great shop, they usually have some slide instruments, but not always. Anyway, they are very nice people and they have a collection of very old and very nice steels.

I was also going to say McCabe's.
I would also check out Forum member Jim Palenscar's Steel Guitars of North County in Oceanside.
Don't know how much involvement Jim has with resos, but it's worth a shot.
A number of pro players agree that the Schertler Basik pickup is the current state-of-the-art pickup for a dobro.
You can learn more about them at the link below, from the Wechter guitar website, but the price is kind've steep for installation into a Black Lightning.

I have the Fishman passive reso pickup in my Clinesmith - no great shakes. But last Sunday I ran it into an ART Tube Microphone Preamplifier before sending it to the mixing board, and it sounded pretty good. The cool this is that this preamp is only about $50 and my normally used Fishman preamp is almost triple that.
That said, I have the guy mix the signal about 65% Shure SM-57 microphone, and about 35% internal pickup.

Hi Brian,
Welcome to the Forum!
I use the Schatten and am very happy with it. I run mine through a LR Baggs pre-amp and to the board when I can. That being said I also like to use a mic when possible.I use the pickup for my "reg" volume and work the mic for fills and lead.Also you should be advised that when amplifying anything like a dobro or accoustic guitar, ect. ect. watch your moniter placement...this can go a long way to eleminate feedback issues.
