I rather a nubbie about e9th playing. I had bought a BMI S10e9th 3x2 to learn on. From reading in the forum, I know you can do alot with just a 3x2. I had a chance to buy S12 extended E 9th 5x5 and sold my S10. The set up on this guitar is similar to how Bobby Lee's
Sierra Sessions SD-12 is extended E9th is set up. except, LKV -10 B to C#, LKR does not lower 2 D#, but lowers E to C#, P1 Lowers 4,6, 11, p4 lowers 5,12, and p5 only lowers 11, rkl lowers2,4,8, and rkr lowers 2,9, and does not raise 7. Does this make sense to anyone, and what type of set up is this??? Thaks Del

This seems to be some really off the wall tuning. It probably works, but you'd be better off putting a standard E9 on it.
After you've mastered the basics you can decide on other changes you want to add, or possible convert the guitar to a universal. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

Makes sense to me. Some of the changes are experimental, though, and my own are not really all that standard either. Here's what I'd recommend:
LKV raising 10th string B to C# isn't something I'd use, especially since you have the standard 9th string lower to C# on RKR. I recommend changing LKV to lower the 5th string B a half step.
Are you sure that P1 is lowering string 4? It would make a lot more sense if it lowered 3, 6 and 11 from G# to G. A lot of people have that on their "0th" pedal. If the rod is actually connected to string 4, you should move it to string 3.
RKL probably lowers the 2nd string D# to C# along with the E lowers (to D#) on 4 and 8. This is fairly common among U-12 players who followed Jeff Newman's lead. Keep it.
RKR lowering 2 and 9 a half step should work well for you. The two changes don't normally interfere with each other. My use of a 7th string raise on that lever is non-standard, and it gets me in trouble sometimes.
You should change P4 to be a standard "C" pedal. It should raise strings 4 and 5 a full step.
There are better things that you could do with LKR, if you have the parts. You might even want to disconnect it for a while until you get the hang of the more standard changes. Ditto with P5. Keep them in reserve for your future ideas. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Bob, I hang'n in there. The forth string is as I described, and I trying to get figure out how to make the change? If not, I going to take it up to Mesquite, to Carter Steel and let Bud, grip about working on a BMI, I'll beg and grable, and with luck I get him to make the changes. If not I could send it to the factory and have them set it up for universal. (That what I think I ultimately want???) Thanks for your help, and advise as you see it? Del |

I've never been a U-12 fan. That's a different subject for sure, though. Frankly, I think you'd need another pedal or two to go that route. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Del, with 5&5 you can easily convert your S12 ext. E9 to a very standard universal. You will have to remove string 9, and move 10, 11 and 12 up (along with their pulls), and add a low B string on the new 12. Let LKR lower your 8th string E to D. That gives you the equivalent of the C6 pedal 6, the most often used pedal (in B6 mode gives you a IV9 chord). Your first three pedals should be the standard E9 A, B, and C pedals. The other two pedals should be setup to have the same pulls as C6 pedals 5 and 7. If you decide you like a uni, someday you can add a pedal and set it up as C6 pedal 8 (boowah pedal). On either ext. E9 or a uni, you should add pulls on the A and B pedals and F lever that have the low strings do the same as the strings an octave above. Many 12-strings don't come with that, but you miss half the fun without that. You can try that for awhile, and if you don't like it, convert back to ext. E9.

I bought a Univ 12, and converted it to Ext E9, since have no interest in learning C6, but looks like if a person was interested in C6, the Univ 12 would be a good way to go (there have been pro & con on this subject in previous threads). This is another of those personal things of what suits "you" and your goal as to where you want to go with it. Personally, I'll be happy with Ext E9 sound if I can ever get proficient with the grips on 12 strings. Love those 2 bass strings, again, if I can ever figure out what to do with them. ![Laughing](images/smiles/icon_lol.gif) _________________ Mullen Lacquer SD 10, 3 & 5; Mullen Mica S 10 1/2 pad, 3 & 5; BJS Bars; LTD400, Nashville 112, DD-3, RV-3, Hilton VP . -- Gold Tone PBS sq neck; Wechter Scheerhorn sq neck. -- "Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone." -anon.- |

I tried E9/B6 and could not deal with the "D" string issue after 20+ yrs on E9th, but when I went to Ext-E9 a couple of yrs ago, it was exactly what I'd always wanted.
