| I'm always amazed every time I hear stuff by Phil that I haven't heard before. A consummate guitar player and musician. His presence on any old record is motivation enough for me to get it. |

| Man, Just some great playing. I sure am happy I got to see him play live along side Buddy Emmons. I remember the "Sound Factory" they played in together. Phil is surely missed. Just a fantastic guitar player who sure made a huge impression on me. |

I got that 45 when it first came out, on the Longhorn label out of Dallas, owned by Dewey Groom. Clarence White told me about Phil, who was playing in a bowling alley in Pomona CA at the time. Vern Stovall was the vocalist on that recording. I think I recognized Harold Hensley as the fiddler immediately to Phil's right.
Phil also cut a record called "One Man Band," also on the Longhorn label. On that one, Phil's band doesn't show up for a series of gigs and Phil has to play the bass, banjo, steel, guitar, etc. It's a hoot to listen to, but not as impressive as "Country Guitar."

Thumbs Carlisle cut a song called "Springfield Guitar Social" on a Starday variety album called Tennessee Guitar a while back. I still have the LP and could post the song if a lot of people haven't heard it. It's in a very similar vein to Phil's song where a variety of guitar styles are covered in one song. It ends with the announcer getting to the last picker in the room and he says "hey there chums, whose that playing with his thumbs? I Like that boy, and I like his style, let's finish this thing like Thumbs Carlisle". Thumbs then finishes out the song in his style, with unbelievable bottom string slides. I give both of these songs a 10 for one picker being able to duplicate so many diverse styles.

Awesome performance! I too was lucky enough to see Phil playing on stage with the Big E at Scotty's in 1981. He had his "pedal rack" at that time... foot pedals, with cables attached to the bridge of his guitar. The foot pedals raised and lowered the pitches of the strings, like a pedal steel guitar. Phil's "pedals" can clearly be heard playing backup on verse 1 of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" by George Jones. When I saw Phil playing live he did an incredible version of "The Shadow of Your Smile" using the pedal rack. That tune is also on the album Nashville Superpickers: Live from Austin City Limits (1979).
The guitar in the video looks like a Mosrite. Go Cat go!

Dittos on the Austin City Limits show in 1979. I was there for the taping, sitting ringside at stage right by Big E and Russ Hicks, who was playing rhythm guitar on that show (he played steel on one tune, using a black Super Pro). It was a great performance by all the pickers.

I have a CD of Phil's which is a reissue of the "Country Guitar" LP and has both "Country Guitar" and "One Man Band" which was out on Longhorn Records. The CD in on Sundazed and the number is SC 6222 with the album titled (Live Wire). It has 13 cuts of which 5 are instrumental not counting the two already mentioned. Vern Stovall does the vocal chores on several songs. The index is like this:

I got to play bass on a few tunes with him and Maurice Anderson when Phil was living in Dallas. He came with Maurice to Blackie Taylor's store in Hawaiian Gardens, Ca. promoting MSA steels. That was when he'd first got the 6 pedal floor unit. If I remember right, he had it installed on a Les Paul at that time......JH in Va.

someone posted the Austin City Limits footage of Phil playing "Shadow of Your Smile" but it's been removed.
I would sure love to see that episode with the Nashville Superpickers. someone's got it.
a DVD release is probably not likely, but they have been reissuing a bunch of ACL shows. the twin steels of Buddy and Russ is amazing.

Scott, he also plays Shadow of Your Smile on one of the live videos taken at Jeffran College with BE on steel I believe. I think Kenny Dail's got a copy and others might also. Fran Newman might still sell those also........JH in Va.

I took this one at the St. Louis convention. He always treated me just like family.
BTW: There was 6 pedals. Each worked one string. The small E/1 thru the A/5 were whole tone raises. The low E/6 was a two and a half tone drop, (to B.)

| I too saw Phil Baugh at the ISGC in 1981. He was playing along with Buddy Emmons and Hoot Hester and if I remember the band was called "Sound Factory". Man do I still remember that night. I also remember Phil having the pedals on his guitar and I believe he also played the song "Georgia" using his pedals. Phil was just a great picker and the video just showcases the talent he was. |
