This is an offshoot of an experiment to capture the before/after effects of a good set up on an off-the-shelf standard regal guitar. More about that later...
In the meantime, I'd be curious to know what Y'all think about the concept of this video clip as a comparison tool.

Rob, I liked the concept for comparison.
As far as the Regal, just off the top, the setup improved it for sure, but my perception was that it improved it somewhat-but it wasn't any giant revelation.
Which is sort of where my opinon has been over the past several years about a pro setup on a Regal.
And I tried to mentally approach the clip without any pre-conceived notions or prejudices.
I have run across a few folks that will rave about a Regal pro setup job as a day and night difference, and I personally haven't found that to be the case-my ears have told me before that though one can hear a definite improvement, "it's still a Regal."

Sorry for the confusion, but this is the Regal before the mod job. (Chicago based luthier) Mitch Nelson from the Different Strummer/Old Town School of Folk Music will be doing the mod job and I will be presenting the before/after in a week or two...have to get it all together still. This was for fun, sort of an experiment; a new way of presenting comparisons.

First off great playing Rob.
Really cool concept. One thing that struck me right off the top is that the Scheerhorn if gorgeous! Really nice clarity--chimy like a piano.
I thought the Regal sounded really good too, but then again you're a really good player. The low- fi "darker" (to my ears) sound of the Regal has it's place......and you can sit around the campfire with some cold ones and abuse her without worrying about a few dings

Wow ! That was great ! I watched it five times. I can't believe how well you synchronised the changes. There doesn't seem to be even a fraction of a second break in the rhythm or a break in the sound. You must have been very careful with the tripod. Not even the carpet moves between shots, and you're sitting in absolutely identical positions.
To get this right:
[1] The guitars had to be absolutely identically tuned.
[2] You had to play at a constant speed.
[3] You had to remember exactly how you picked. Not a small task, since folk musicians rarely play the same piece the same way twice !

Best comparison I have ever seen and heard - great job!
The Scheerhorn uses a baffled, more open box which gets the bassier sound while the Regal, I think, still uses the standard soundwell which is less bassier. It also looks like the strings may be different tensions on the guitars - are they the same, brand and guages?

Thanks everyone! I really do appreciate the feedback.
Believe it or not, it's not really all that complicated to do this. Shooting the video clips took me less than 10 minutes, and editing the video clips on my computer took maybe 15-20 minutes, tops.
I didn't intend to do a comparison via video clips, the idea just occured on a whim...and although the audio is nowhere near "professional" quality, the recording circumstances - the room, the song, the player - are all identical and it actually seems to work pretty well.
Jim, I have no idea what brand of strings was on the Regal. I doubt they were identical to what I use on my Scheerhorn (GHS-1650s)...
I have now posted a video clip on my web site which demonstrates the before/after of the Regal with professional set-up by (Chicago based) player/luthier/repairman Mitch Nelson.

Very good PPT charts of the mods and corrections. I noticed that the strings are fed under the tailpiece for more down-bearing like Tut Taylor uses (my Taylor Virginian reso came from factory with that setup.)
Also, TOTALLY agree with the correct slotting of both the nut and bridges; it's easy to ruin the sound at these points. Unless you have the correct tools from slotting, let a pro do it, like you did.
Now, play the fire out of it! Make another video after a year or two of playing it and see how the sound may have changed.
