I had the pleasure of watching Jerry Newberry and his 12-year old grandson -- Austin Stewart play this morning in Dallas. They were absolutely FANTASTIC!!!
I heard about Austin's playing at the St. Louis show last year, and he makes playing the PSG look easy. Also, Austin's grandfather deserves a lot of credit for teaching this young man to play like the pro that he is.

This was my first TSGA Jamboree to attend, and I look forward to next year's Jamboree. I thoroughly enjoyed every show that I watched, and even got to meet and talk to two or three of the performers. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see Buddy Emmons play last night as it was standing room only but still this was a show that I will never forget.

May God Bless Each And Everyone,

Donny

Austin did a set on his own Sunday afternoon. Awesome . He played OBS so fast the band just barely stayed with him. Jody.

I have been watching Austin for a good number of years now and it is always striking to the see the progress he's made. Last year he had begun to really smooth out and this year you could really hear he has all the right stuff. How does someone that young know all the old standards like he does? Last year I went up and told Jody that Austin was ready for his own spot and PaPa Jerry needs to see if he can play by himself now that Austin has taught him how. (Just kidding Jerry, you're a jewel too) My wife visited with the ladies of the clan and they are just as nice as Jerry and Austin.

Austin is one terrific player at 12...imagine in another couple years??!!! Jerry and the family have really invested in time, energy and finances to help Austin and that is truly commendable. It's so good to see Austin develop into a great young man and player.

Thanks to all the nice comments on Jerry and Austin. We are VERY proud of Austin and I do think Jerry deserves a LOT of credit for the way he has been able to help Austin. Austin steal has a lot to learn, but now they are teaching each other things. Austin has been good for Jerry. I think it has pushed him in his playing. It is good for my OLD heart to see them out in the music room and at the shows playing together. Hope they get to do that for a LONG time to come. Thanks to all the shows that give them spots together and also by themselves. See everyone down the road.

P.S. Better watch out for brother Dalton. He's coming right along on that piano!!!!!!!!

ONE PROUD GRANDMA!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I am just now seeing this post.

Danny, I enjoyed talking with your wife in Dallas. She is a very nice lady.

Austin knows all those old classic songs because Papa doesn't allow anything other than old classics to be played in his music room. Very Happy Just kidding, Papa is the one who made sure Austin cut his teeth on all those old songs though.

Austin plays with a local band at home here that plays old country and a little of the old rock. The band members have children Austin's age who have their own group and they are really good. They do John Mayer (hope I spelled that right) type music, which I like a little of, but not too much. Anyhow, the young guys wanted Austin to play with them as well. I told him he could, but when he tried to listen to their music to learn their songs, he turned it off and said he couldn't stand to listen to it long enough to learn it. He chose to play with the older folks and bow out of the younger band. He truely loves those old country tunes deep in his heart, he is not just copying Papa. It's in his heart.

I enjoyed your sons playing. Dallas was my first Steel Show, I started playing about 3 months ago, and taking lessons once a week. I am almost 26 and was glad to see someone actually younger than me there..haha He is a tremendous player, and seems to have a good head on his shoulders, and I dont blame him for keeping with the traditional country! Hope to see ya'll there next year and I enjoyed it! Very Happy

I too have been watching Austin for several years. He is super polite and very quiet. I had the pleasure of manning the sound board on Sunday. I noticed he had the mic pushed back so asked if he was going to use the mic, he replied no sir. I said you didn't talk Saturday either to which he replied no sir. I said so I guess you aren't taking today either, you guessed it, he said no sir. I said you came to play not talk right? He said yes sir that's it and he grinned. I really like that boy. If you did not get his new CD, "Steelin The Show", shame on you. It is great. Jerry, I hope I can get my grandson to slow down a little (he's 5) and learn some music. Keep up the good work Newberry/Stewart team.

Hello Brandon and James. I am glad to hear Austin is being polite.

Brandon, I look forward to hearing you play some time. As we all know, you don't hear of too many younger steel players at the shows. I know they are out there because if you look real hard you can see them sitting way on the back of the stage behind these new country singers. I am terrible at remembering names and faces, so if we met, please forgive me for not remembering you. Please come up and chat with us next time we meet at a show.

James, we have been trying to get Austin to at least introduce his songs and say hello in the mic. His Papa won't set the example for him, so we haven't been able to talk him into it yet. I told him if he was going to keep joking with the band (waltzing Orange Blossom Special to slow it down for the ones who complained about it being fast) that he was going to have to let the crowd in on it by talking a little.

I am very proud of how far he has come in letting a tiny bit of his personality show. When he first started he frowned at any attention and hated for people to touch him. Now he will actually visit with you if you start the conversation and I think he is starting to like hugging the little ladies who are his biggest fans. Playing on stage and being around the crowds at these shows has really helped his confidence and helped him grow as a person.

Hello Dana,

We did not meet at the show. When I first got into steel I did not realize there werent very many younger guys out there, or at least dont participate in the shows. Hopefully one day I will get good enough and I will get to play at one of these shows. I must say I am encouraged by your sons playing Very Happy Take care and see ya next year!

Hey Brandon. You keep up the good work on steel and we will look forward to hearing you play some time. I know Austin would love to jam with you in one of the rooms about these shows. He loves meeting other young steel players.

Dana...

I was very impressed with Austin's playing. I heard his Sunday set and it was fantastic. I was there with my grandson who is 8. He's been coming to the Dallas show with me since he was 4, and he's always liked the steel and listening to steel music. He alwas liked to fool aroud with mine when he visits.
My intention was to try to get him started with lessons when he was about 10. Won't really work getting it from me as I live in Pennsylvania and he lives in Houston.

After he heard Austin (he and I went up and spoke with Austin after the set and Tyler wanted to get his albums...which we did) Tyler informed me he wanted to get started now. So we've bought him a Carter Starter and he's now set up taking lessons from Billy Phelps in Houston.

So Austin has inspired him to get started and is Tyler's current steel hero!! We'll see where it goes from here.

Hi Bill, I am so glad to hear your grandson has started taking lessons on steel guitar. He could not have picked a better person to take lessons from either. Billy and Patty are wonderful people who have encouraged Austin every step of the way in any way they could.

We will look forward to hearing your grandon play some time. I am sure Austin will feel honored that he inspired another youngster to play when I tell him of this post. Thanks for letting us know this.
