What five steel players talents combined would make the perfect Steel guitar player? (speed smoothness knowledge etc
name the player and his specialty and if you think its more than 5 players then name a player for each thing you think it would take to make a perfect steel player.

Warren, I wouldn't want to risk slighting anyone by assigning a single asset to them. Some of my favorite players are Tom Morrell, Joaquin Murphy, Cindy Cashdollar, Bobby Ingano and more. Keb Mo brought a tear to my eye one night with a rendition of "When Henry Plays the Steel Guitar". All of these players have all of the qualities I mentioned in different degrees. Also, there are many Steel Players I haven't yet listened to that will certainly be added to my list of favorites! Wink

For me, sensitivity and versatility are the most important two things. Mr. Perfect not only has to be able to play the fire out of his guitar (lots of people can do that) but has to be able to play a wide variety of styles as well as to shine as either a soloist or a background instrument as well as to know when to go genitalia to the wall and when to do something more mellow as is apropriate to the setting. So we can add a third thing, judgement. I think we should assume technical skill and begin to judge perfection with these three things-sensitivity, versatility and judgement.

Edward that makes a lot of sense what you said . I think every player has something different that he is special at . And really when you think about it who really knows what makes a perfect steel player . I know when i go watch these great players EACH ONE SEEMS TO SHINE IN CERTAIN AREAS. Like the smoothness of John Hughey the amazing Joe Wright how he entertains. and the tones Herbie Wallace gets from the steel. And Russ Hicks licks on the steel is awesome. I guess if you took all the steel players and took a little form each one you would have the perfect steel player . Any way Im grateful to all the steel players for all their years of dedication and practice so they can bring us such beautiful music .

To make the perfect steel player, I would combine the brains of :

Buddy Emmons: to give the sound drive and muscle

Tom Brumley: to put a smile on everyones face

Lloyd Green: to open everyone's tear ducts

Joe Wright: no explaination needed

Bobby Bowman: to be able to fix anything mechanically that went wrong

And last of all........ he would have my face..... ha ha

Aaaaahhhh! The perfect steeler. All of the above plus many others.A perfect steeler is the one I am listening to at any given moment. It can be Buddy E., The Moon, Hal, Bobby, Don, Murph, (either one), more than I can name in such limited space. Besides, WHAT is perfection? And whom is the judge? There is so much good steelin and it just overrides perfection.

Can't keep it to five, but for pedal steel it's:
Buddy Emmons - technical virtuosity in all areas
Jimmy Day - soul
Lloyd Green - purity, intellect and class
Paul Franklin - versatility
Curly Chalker - independence
Reece Anderson - creativity
B.J. Cole - spirit of adventure
Joe Wright - entertainment
