How do you guys think he will fare in the halftime show. Looks to me from the promo clips he has been taking guitar lessons from the dude in "in living color". I am going to give him a fair chance..Hopefully they let that boy boogie.

A WARM-UP SHOW
Prince offered a blistering taste of what might be in store when he played live for a room of reporters at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Thursday. He showed off his hard-rock guitar chops with Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode; covers were a theme of his Hard Rock show, too -- which is strange, since one of the reasons Coplin says they hired his Purple Majesty is because of his amazing song repertoire. He dove into that catalog for Anotherloverholenyohead and Get on the Boat, an '06 track with a swinging salsa break.
That song's theme of inclusiveness -- ''We've got room for 100 more,'' Prince sang -- captures why Prince, despite the odd turns he's taken, was a natural half-time choice. He's a unique individual who has fans of all types, as was evident at the sold-out Hard Rock: Black, white, gay, straight, old, young, and everything in between.
Prince took no questions at the press conference. Coplin likewise refuses to divulge details of the performance. He did say that the show's producers knew all along that Prince was their man for '07.
''He's a tremendous performer: The guy is Jimi Hendrix and James Brown rolled into one,'' Coplin says. ``Like ['05 performer McCartney], he has this tremendous legacy. He appeals to rock fans and R&B, he skews to that large demographic. Also in early meetings with us he got what the Super Bowl is. He wanted to create a show that was unique to the Super Bowl.''
There are people who only watch the half-time show. Acts including U2 and Michael Jackson have created career milestones on this stage. Having almost disappeared from sight at one point, Prince could become the ultimate comeback act tonight.
Don't watch it expecting Great Art. But it could be a Pop Moment for the history books. Britto looks at his moment during TV's biggest night with warm, fuzzy optimism, envisioning a utopian tableau -- before a bunch of oversized men go out and try to smear each other into the ground over a ball: ``The world, we're going so long with so many despairs, so many people killing each other: I think at the end of the day we want to have great moments, to bring people together in a playing field to forget about suffering. I want my art to be like an instrument that brings moments of peace and love and positivity.''

what a great choice. he's an amazing performer.
he's always been one badass guitar player too. that's nothing new. here's his solo on "My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the RnR HoF tribute to George Harrison. this is a good example of the "Jimi Hendrix and James Brown" comparison:

His real name is Prince!
Prince Rogers Nelson.
technically anyone with hands can play those licks. it's just the blues. he's also a great songwriter, showman, dancer, and he knows the meaning of the word groove. here's another clip of his Miami press conference a few days ago, which includes Johnny B. the solo he does around 5:30 is pretty Jimi-esque.

yeah i enjoyed the hell out of it.
the stage was pretty outrageous, and the dancing, glowing marching band was a nice touch of classic american football tradition.
always nice to see a Telecaster in good hands, and i'd say he fit the bill.
btw, there are some great country versions of Prince tunes: the Derailers do "Raspberry Beret" (it was a "hidden" track on their 'Reverb Deluxe' album) and a band called the Okra All-Stars do a twangy "Purple Rain"...
word of advice: play one of his songs at your next gig. the ladies love the Prince.

| What I want to know is, was he really playing electric guitar outdoors in the pouring rain, or just faking it to a track? Certainly Billy Joel's keys were soaked with rain while he played; can't imagine who would let a grand piano out in the rain... |

I thought Prince's (or whatever he calls himself these days) large, purple, androgenous(or perhaps "hermaphroditic" is a better term)-gender-symbol-made-into-a-guitar contraption was interesting. Other than that, it sucked. This thread is more interesting than the entire half-time show.

OF COURSE I would have liked to see a Mahavishnu Orchestra reunion or Jeff Beck jamming with Steve Morse, but in it's stead I was happy enough to hear minute after minute of screaming lead guitar, played by SOMEBODY, at last. I am SO very tired of squeaky little-girl singers and chain-festooned goons hollering pornographic nursery rhymes. Around 1994, I distinctly remember thinking, "Well this rap stuff must've about run it's course." Ha! Maybe, I WILL outlive it after all.. hopefully, possibly, between Prince, John Mayer and a few spawn of 60's dinosaurs, it may actually become COOL again to play with your teeth and blow up some amps. Prince even CHANGED KEYS every now and then, how about that. 
(I was somewhat alarmed by his transcendently-bizarre Aunt Jemima do-rag - what was he thinking? - but once he doffed his hair-bow, he kicked it pretty hard indeed). |

| To me, Prince is a lot like Michael Jackson, who was a lot like the Beatles, who were a lot like Elvis. These performers seem to stay on top by constantly re-inventing themselves and adapting to changes in music tastes. Prince has mastered a lot of styles, and probably will even try some form of country music one day, much like Ray Charles did. |

Sometimes what I saw plainly did not match what I heard. Ergo, QED, he was faking. Or maybe somebody else was playing live, matching his sound.

Did his guitar have a cord sticking out of it?You can play electric guitar in the rain if you are wireless.I didn't see the game or the show(not a sports fan)but I like Prince...he seems to be pretty talented!Was he better than the Rolling Stones last year?I thought they sounded good-just like the Rolling Stones-but everybody else thought they sounded bad.
