In an attempt to preserve and promote a style of Hawaiian Steel Guitar playin' ... that I feel may be fadin' away ...
I.E. ... Jerry Byrd Slant Bar Style ...
I have added a new page to my website ...
It will contain the tab and mp3 ... of a short passage ... from one of JB's Pro-Arrangements ... that I feel demonstrates this style of playin'.
Since its just me, don't expect too much ... but I'm gonna give it a-go ...
Give me somethin' to do while feedin' Tucker durin' the day and some incentive to head down to my "Lair" and play some in the evenin's ...

Thanks Ric, great way to study and learn. One thing I'm finding myself doing more and more is playing the melody line without any harmony under it first. I then try and see how the line is harmonized under it and what it might possible mean as far as what all the intervals relate to as a foundational chord/scale etc relative to that melody note. I believe Joe Pass did something kinda similar.  |

...great sound, Rick __ very, very clean.
Are you using a 3/4" dia. bar to make those "split-string" slants? I know Jerry did.
I play a few tunes with "split-string" triads; but I'm using a short 7/8" dia. bar (Fender string spacing). It sounds OK to me; but some players say 3/4" is more accurate.

Thanks y'all ... just tryin' to be useful.
I just added the rhythm snippet (w/o steel) that goes with the passage ... and will do that for the ones that follow.
I hope to assemble a "library" of these segments ...
After awhile ... you start to see patterns to his "ways" ... that can be applied to your own stuff.
I view these 200+ Pro Arrangements* as a legacy he left us ... along with his recordings.
Studing them ... doesn't mean you want to be a "JB Clone" ... ... its just makes sense to take advantage of all the things he left us.
Well, thats my opinion anyway.

Yes Clean ... I've gone back to the trusty 2 3/4" x 3/4" bullet bar (a Red Rajah here).
I'm even undergoin' some medical treatments ... to get my "Byrd Finger" back in workin' order (well at least able to hit a string) ...

Diligent is what you are, Rick. Why else would you get all those 'Honey do's'--and do's--and...  Thanks alot! JZ
BTW, the vibrato rate comparison sono's are a revelation. This is all about individual artistry--each has a 'signature' --something we all strive to develop over time. Neat!
