We had an unusual surprise at our monthly Cornell Hurd Band show at the Broken Spoke this past Friday. Junior Brown was there with the Texas Troubadours – Pete Mitchell, Johnny Cox, Ronnie Dale and the drummer, who’s name I didn’t catch. They were in town to do a tribute show to Ernest Tubb, but the show got cancelled, so they all came over to the Spoke.

They were all itchin’ to play, so Cornell graciously had them come and do a set. Junior did songs strictly from the ET repertoire, and it was terrific. I got to see ET 5 or 6 times over the years starting in the mid-70’s, and Junior is as close to ET in voice as one can find. Not an ET impersonator, but someone who clearly loves to use his voice to get those unique ET vocalisms. The Texas Troubadours sounded fabulous, with Johnny and Pete shining on their solos and kick-offs. Junior can do those Billy Byrd/Leon Rhodes licks as well as anyone at it was a real treat for the dancers and anyone else who got to hear it.

They don’t do this often, but if you ever hear about Junior doing an ET tribute with members of the Texas Troubadours in your town, do yourself a favor and go see ‘em.

You never know what’s gonna happen at the Broken Spoke.

Being old enough to have seen TEF's TV show, I'd have to say that he has the Tennessee Ernie thing down even better.

Dang! When I saw "ET" in the topic, I thought for sure we were starting another ET vs JI tuning discussion.

The first thing I thought about when I first heard Junior was the close relation of his natural voice to ET's. Without aping ET in any way, he really gets the sound and the feel. The greatest compliment, IMO. Of course, his guitar and steel playing is pretty good, too, eh?

Howard, it was terrible that our show got cancelled but we had a great time anyway. The drummer is Don Mills. Don played for Ernest in the 70's during the Buddy Charlton era. Cornell and Mr. White was very gracious to let us play a set with Junior Brown, what a talent. The Cornell Hurd Band was great. My first time to hear you guys and gal (Dixie chick).

Junior Brown would be my number one choice to a double CD ET tribute album. ET had so many great songs.

I thought this thread would be about this:

Junior has that magic touch, you know.

Seriously, sounds like a rare treat. I'd listen to Junior playing anything, but I'd love to hear something like this.
