I just wanted to let you all know what happend to me with one of the Forum Members
I think its been about 3 months now. I traded Guitars with Fred Werkimeister of Arkansas. we got to calling each other and i thought we were becoming friends.Well,i told him i was using a RV3 and Hilton Volume pedal. He said he would like to try them and see how much better sound he would get, well, i always like to try and help any one i can, so i sent him the RV3 and extra Hilton pedal just to use not to keep. I have been trying for over a month and a half to get it back and he wont send it back. i called him and he always had his answering machine on. I sent e mails and he said he would send it back, well, i kept sending e mails and he kept saying the same thing. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. So, today i sent him another e mail but it came back, no longer active. its really sad to know when you try helping someone they do you like this. I just wanted to let everyone know what happened. It gives the Forum a bad name when someone does this. I know im not the only one that it has happend too. thanks |

Why can't you trust some PEOPLE? Steelplayers aren't any better or worse than anyone else. There are bad apples everywhere. I hope you get your stuff back.
I had a friend, a full-time guitar player, who was known around Las Vegas where I lived at the time. He'd had some back luck and had hocked his custom-made Strat. He'd just gotten back together with his wife and they had a baby, he was trying to get things back together. I loaned him my Fender Strat to use til he could buy himself a guitar. He took it and split town with it. I finally found out he was in Florida. I don't know where he is now, but I haven't heard from him or my Strat since I loaned it to him, in around 1990. The only other guitar I had to play was my '64 Gibson SG. The Strat he swiped was the best-sounding and playing Strat I ever had.
I sincerely hope your stuff is returned.... either way, we can at least learn something from this.[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 03 July 2006 at 05:13 PM.] |

Sorry to hear that Larry I know how you feel as I have been a sucker all my life. When I was building steels I had three guys take off with them before they were paid for, but we learn. Now when the last dollar is paid I will let stuff go. No loners or try outs

I've never seen the name either, but then there are always posts by someone I never saw before.... but I searched the forum on the name Fred Werkimeister both as a username and also as subject, and the only appearance is in this thread, so if he's a member it seems he's never posted... only b0b would know for sure... either way, it looks like you've been taken. |

Sorry to hear about this, Larry.
Any Joe Blow can email a member from this site. It may not be a great thing that one does not have be associated with the forum to correspond by email and buy/sell items. Most times I assume someone's a member if they contact me with forum-related business. I haven't had any bad experiences, but it sure gives you piece of mind if they have a membership here. Too bad this guy took advantage of the trust that goes along with that.
I wonder is there a way to only make members' email addresses accessible to other members?[This message was edited by Chris LeDrew on 03 July 2006 at 05:46 PM.] |

Any time I do business with someone who heard about me through the forum, I always ask if they are a member. I dont' buy or sell unless they are and I check their past posts for any issues. I've never had a problem with any forum member yet and I've bought and sold a lot of stuff here. |

The name sparked some memories from the forum's past. Unfortunately a search (note the spelling: Werkmeister) turns up a confusing post that hints at something further but the link within it is dead. This may be a red herring and even at best it is not useful.

Larry there is some states that have a law where as anything that is sent to you by mail is yours to keep, you really shouldn't have done that just be lucky it wasn't more and I do feel for you, but these types are out there... |

Sorry about this. I have a strong feeling that your experience is the exception that proves the rule. I'd just like to say that although I haven't had dealings with many folks on the Forum, I know the guys in Portland to be top shelf. They've all been a great help and inspiration to me, and I thank them.

Larry, sorry to hear about your loss,it's happened to a lot of us.I've never heard of this steel player or the town in ark. There is a town in Mo.by that name close to Branson. That Hilton pedal has a code in it that Keith Hilton can keep track of,might pay to tell him about it.He hates crooks and thieves.Good luck,Gary A. Oh yeah,Evening Shade was the old Bert Reynolds tv series supposed to be in Ark. not real. [This message was edited by Gary Atkinson on 03 July 2006 at 08:29 PM.] |

Mapquest shows three towns in Arkansas with the name, Evening Shade. I'll bet that gets confusing to the mailman. |

Larry,
FWIW,try this: He may have a "caller ID" on his phone. If you punch in "*67" BEFORE you dial his number,it will come up,"caller unknown" on his caller ID. Its worth a try. If you get the answer machine, don't leave any message,& keep tryin' that method. Perhaps, eventually, his curiosity will get the best of him.

Guys, we get stuff thru EMAIL everyday now from low lifes trolling all sorts of forums. Please use your best common sense when opening, reading or replying.
This situation does sound like a goof ball musician as I doubt anyone would go thru all this scam trouble for a Reverb pedal and a Volume pedal. But this person was just trolling the forum, he was not a member. And we all know that he DID live in Arkansas . Probably still does. The Sherrif's dept. can find this guy real easy.
Net scammers are looking for the large score, not $200 worth of used gear.

Evening Shade, AR. does exist, north of Batesville---I've been there, and as John Parker said he lives very close by, so it's not ficticious.
As Tony P. said, it's mail fraud, I would report it to your Post Master. I doubt you will have to "bend" your story. Mail fraud is mail fraud. The guy misrepresented himself to you. If you bend your story, you may become guilty of mail fraud yourself.
Seems to me I read of a similar incident a few years ago of a similar situation, from this same area in Arkansas. Anyone else remember? |

As I say above, yes, it does bring up some vague recollection. My link may or may not provide further clues. |
