Well it was another great year at the TSGA show!! Everyone I saw play just blew me away once again!
Every year though there seems to be a performance that just stands out. I heard quite a few comments that share the same feelings I do concerning the Saturday afternoon set of Reece Anderson & Paul Franklin.
Those guy's were flat smokin'!! Both were playing MSA Superslide's and played them like no one else could. Their respect and admiration of each other was very evident. I believe they were feeding off each other which led them both to the top of their game!
I believe it is just awesome for 2 players of this caliber to be able to share the stage and compliment each others style so well! It made me want to take all the pedals & levers off my guitar!
Getting to hear Teresa sing is always the icing on the cake for me! She's as good as any but I don't think she even knows it!
Thanks to Reece, Paul & Teresa for a very memorable performance!!! |

Man I wish I could have been there to see that.
I know there's a lot of controvesey involved but perfromances like this SHOULD be videotaped, not just for the benefit of those of us who couldn't be there, but for future generations of players.

I'd have to agree, that set with Reece and Paul was as good as any steel performance I've ever heard. That will stick in my mind for a long time. Great stuff! |

Mike, I wish I had the words to better describe what those of us who were there witnessed, but I just can't do it justice.
I've been to a lot of steel shows and seen the best of the best but Reece & Paul together was just magical!
Just think of what they are each capable of seperatly, add it together and multiply by 10.....that's the best way I can say it....as close to "supernatural" as I've ever heard!
I agree, a video would be great! Of course it wouldn't be like being there, but as you said, it would allow those who couldn't make it to witness a historical event! It would definatly be in my collection! |

I just hope these two gents are going to repeat this at next year's show which I intend to attend. I know that these two run a mutual admiration society - their styles are completely different but both are geniuses at what they do. Reece's ability to come out with monster chords on his Superslide is unbelievable. Neither Reece or Paul bluff through their improvisation - their musical knowledge is really high. |

It was the highlight of the show for me. The only thing that came close was listening to Paul play the superslide in the MSA room the night before.
I just hope they decide to do a duet superslide album. It would be a crime not to document the two of them playing non pedal together. |

How could a history-making meeting like this NOT be recorded? Two of the greatest musicians to ever pick up a bar!

I had just arrived at the show (up really early, long flight, etc.)and walked in during this fantastic pairing. Just brilliant. Then the chord work Reece did to accompany Teresa was just amazing. Hearing Reece and Paul play together was beyond description.

This was the best set I've ever heard at a steel show, truly inspiring.
It was not only great for the virtuosity displayed, but most important, it was a real conversation between two musicians who really had something to say.

I too was blown away by Reece and Paul's Superslide set. I spent a lot of time in the MSA room listening too. On Sunday morning, Reece and Lonnie Bennet was playing together, when Reece re-tuned a couple of strings and launched into "Malaguena". I had never heard this song even played on a pedal steel, and here Reece was playing it on a non-pedal steel. I was flabbergasted, if thats even a word.
I also asked Lonnie to play "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and Reece backed him up with those extended chords much like he did Teresa when she sang "You Lift Me Up" on the main show. It was absolutely beautiful.
It's unbelievable the music those guys can get without pedals.

Reece and Paul together was truly amazing and a high light of my short day trip to Dallas. Just incredible hearing these two Giants of the steel guitar play together. It was a great lesson for me to hear such a huge ammount of music come from such a small guitar. Just wonderful!

A special thanks also to the guys I play with each week, Ron Jones, (bass) Chris Booher, (piano), and Nathan Coates. (drums) |

How bout this; A pedal & raise Es, pick 8,6 & 5 at 3rd fret, then at 4th fret, then 6th fret. Then pedals up and strum 6,5,4 at lst fret, & 5,4,& 3 at lst fret; then A pedal and 5,4, & 3 at 4th fret, then A pedal & raise Es & pick 5,4, & 3 at 3rd fret. Just some ideas to come close..... |

Charles....what a great ear you have. You perfectly described a run Paul made on the first song before he got warmed up, only difference is.......he was not using pedals.... |

Reece, correct me if I'm wrong but many years ago I think that I had a 45 rpm of a DJ doing an interview with you at a station in Texas and you hit a lick on your steel; if I remember correctly you said, "this is going to sound kind of empty because there is no rhythm section". I don't know what happened to it, I'm sure it got lost in one of our military moves. I sure wish I had been at this one. |

Charles....Thank you for remembering the DJ interview recording I made. It was part of a promotional package MSA sent to thousands of steel players all over the world. |

IMO, the best rythmn section in town. In a lot of towns, for that matter. |
