On the local NPR station I heard a version of "Scrapple in the Apple" done by Herb Ellis. Besides Herb and his trio there was a fiddler and a steel guitarist. Does anyone know who it was? Any ideas what album it might be from?

It's from Herb Ellis' Texas Swings album. Steel is Herb Remington, fiddles are Johnny Gimble and Bobby Bruce, Floyd Domino played piano, Tommy Alsup on bass, Tommy Perkins on drums.

Some of the album swings fer sure, but some of it sounds really uptight to me. Like songs were rushed, played too fast, and the pickers were not having a good time.

You forgot Willie, who did some vocals on the album, I believe it was a gospel song no less, it has been a while since I listened to it. Both Herbs did some fine playing on this album.

That's possibly the worst guitar tone I've ever heard from Herb Ellis.

I,too, have that album, but "Scrapple..." doesn't appear on mine. Is there another volume of this album?

I have to agree w/ the above comments. Not the best tone from Herb. However,I did have the pleasure of meeting Herb, when I was w/ T.O.,& we did the Merv Griffin Show from Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. He was very congenial. HOWEVER,(again) Merv was a TOTAL JERK!! He wanted us to sign our checks,& give them back,as if we got paid.We didn't. We cashed 'em,but never worked his show again.

I was told that Herb Ellis did not want to do that particular album, but he was under contract and the record company wanted a "Country and Western" record. Bobby Bruce told me Herb was bitchin' the whole time about doing that genre of music, and the rest of the band was really put out by him.
I haven't heard the record but I suppose one can feel the intensity.

According to Herb, Merv Griffin was a real jerk alright. Still owes Herb $200 from a show Herb did and never got paid. I guess that's how you get to be a millionaire. Hire people and then don't pay them. Sad, so sad.

Well, Merv Griffin used to be a big-band leader. Now would a person in such a position ever stiff one of their musicians? Hah!
