I have an idea for a post.. I would like to post a few [5 or 6 maybe] very short studio clips of me playing three different steels.[NO not all at the same time..] I would like to see if anyone can guess which brand steel is used for which clip.

I want to make a little contest out of it, with a valuable prize sent to the first correct answer from here in beautiful downtown Candor NY ,home of the 3 legged pack mule.
Actually its only worth a few bucks but I promise it will be something EVERY steel player can use!

In any case, I don't think I can post clips with my limited computer knowledge. It might be easier for me to have a friend record the clips onto a small CD and send them to someone here that can post them on the thread for me.. unless there is some way to record them onto the computer and then email them to someone..

Anyway, can one of my forum friends help this techno clod out?... I'm still in 1980 technology wise!!... bob

Thanks Jay.. I'll call him tonight and see if he can help me out!! I'll hail you when they are ready.. This should be kind of interesting.. The same mediocre playing on 3 diffent out of tune guitars with 3 different incompetent engineers, then asking my friends to listen to them and decide which poor sounding clip goes with which bad guitar!!!thanks for the help Jay !!! bob

Bob-- Do you think they would hire John Hughey ? A persons attitude and ability is more important--age should not be the factor. I have read several posts of top notch players who have had difficulty in finding work and others with less playing ability who seem to be able to aquire jobs. The outgoing personality of that person makes the difference. I'm not talking BS--they are sincere and easy to get along with. Joe

I was going to send a mail to Scottie and suggest that he set up something along this line at the 2005 SGC. It would be interesting to find out if there actually is any real distinguishable difference in the better brands of steel guitars. This would have to be done however under strictly controlled conditions and without some sly cheating involved. (not that a steel player would ever think of stooping to such a thing)

Larry.. all clips were done on small Fender Deluxe Reverb amps in 3 different studios 12 years apart .. The sound IS dramatically different.. but all equally mediocre. I just want to see what everyone thinks each clip is played on..

I will reveal the steels used when I post the thread. When I listen to the recordings, even I think I got the tones all ass backwards..there is NO rhyme or reason.. Its just a little good clean fun if I can pull it off.. I want to show you guys how I can take 3 perfectly good steels ,ruin the tone on each ,until each one sounds like the other, and NONE sounds good, and everyone who hears them is as confused as me. bob

At least you're consistent!

Really Bob, we know you're just being modest.

But Bob; we already know what 3 steels you have; as you have posted a number of times. And to choose which steel(either the MSA or Carter or Sho-bud) is a piece of cake. But I won't answer unless I know what I win; because I only play to win and if there is nothing to win; I don't play Eventhough I will know the answers as soon as you post and I hear the clips; I don't understand why one would play(just to pat ones own self on the back???)
Don't get me wrong; I do want to play the game, but I want to know I LOST something if I loose

AH HA!!!.. Ricky pinned himself down!! He has gone out on a limb and stated here in public he is going to NAIL it!!. . Ricky I can't reveal the prize, but I PROMISE it is something every steel player needs!!

You are correct Ricky.. The steels you mentioned are the 3 I have played on recordings over the years..BUT,, I have them so screwed up through odd pickup/wiring configurations that I'm betting even very sharp steel players like you will be a little confused. Let me say this.. IMO none of these guitars sounds "normal".. I really think this will be fun,and hey if nothing else, we can all laugh at my playing!!.. Let me get together with my friend.. and see if he'll help me put this together..
[ well,, about my friend,, we played in a band for 12 years together and I think he hates me cause a lot of the girls liked me better !!! ]]

Just a little fun stuff here.. maybe I'm wrong,, I don't know.. maybe my oddball setups are "generic" sounding..3 pickups in the MSA-2 in the Sho Bud- 8-12 K coil tap in the Carter.. they sound ugly to me, but maybe they are normal.. I hope I can get this together... bob

Now that's NOT fair....ha
No guitar will sound like it's true self being equipt with that......>I'll go ahead and say it in advance: "I give up; what the he!! is that?".

Ricky.. they are not really that far "out there"... The Bud had its original pickup.. actually TWO of them side by side,,but I rarely used the two together..

The MSA was the real odd ball.. a GeorgeL 10-5 with 5 way switch was closest to the changer, next came a Sho Bud coil tap unit from a mid 60's 6139,and then the stock MSA.. It had about 4 switches doing all kinds of coil tapping, reverse phasing, and combining.. it was a pretty cool mess.

The Carter is a different sound because I had Jerry Wallace wind a pickup with a tap in it. and it is wound very lightly 8-12 K.. its quite a bright guitar by todays standards.....

Ron ,,thanks !! I just hope my old long time bandmate has the time to help me out. bob

I PROMISE this "valuable" grand prize will bring a smile to the face of the lucky winner. Our crack procurement staff has spared NO expense!

Now I just need to get my ex fiddle player/ friend to lend me a hand!!! .. I promise this will be fun...I am thinking of including a really rotten "clam" solo I played.I don't know if I'm brave enough.. everyone will think I stink more than I actually do!!... bob
