I manage a piano store in Michigan and we have a senior organ class. The class leader asked me if I could play "Song of the Island" for the group. I got my first lap in 1975 and used it to play in my band in the David Lindley style. This was my first time at Hawaiian. It came off very well, thanks to Danny James who sent me a copy of his arrangement for 6 string E tuning.

I still have three old B6 Ricks and will try a few other tunings. It sounds good through my old Les Paul Jr. amp and the two are sure easier to carry than my ZB D10 and a Fender Pro Reverb amp! I just ordered Mike Ihde's CD and book and will try that.

Long live the lap steel!

Russ

Hey Russ, good for you. I'm a little confused on the pictures though. They look exactly the same.

Thanks,

I had a chance to see and hear Hawaiian 25 years ago. Dwight Harris, who lived near me in Dearborn Michigan, came to my apartment in 1980 and played his 7 string Rick. He used E13 I believe? Dwight moved to Florida soon after and I lost track of him. He has to be about 85 now. Anyone know anything about him?
He was a great guy and I'm sorry I didn't have more time to learn from him.

Randy, We posted at the same time. I hate ties! 25 years with ties! Did I say I hate ties!

Russ

Dwight was fantastic. He tuned his 6 strg Rick E B G# Eb and I can't rremember the last two. Dwight would say that depending on the root he was using E7 or B11 by not picking the first strg.Dwight would play the song first time through in E7 and the 2nd time in his form of B11. Occasionally he would run the B up to C# to play Paradise Isle, Sweet Someone, or whatever, and if another lead would take a chorus he would come back in, after running the C# back to B and play the song using the B tuning. C.C.,

Dwight had a great touch and tone. I have some reel to reel tapes of Dwight playing in my apartment. I'll have to see if I can dump it to my minidisk to share.

All the best,
Russ
