When I saw "Box" in Branson several years ago his steel player was named Harlan Powell.

I saw Boxcar afew years ago and Harlan Howard was his steel man. I bought a tape of his. If memory is correct, he was married to Jan Howard. He did a good job.

I saw Boxcar quite a few times over here. on one occasion('79,`80?), I said to my pals at the gig; "I'm sure that is Reece Anderson." I am still sure, but would love to know if anyone can confirm this.

I know my dad was playing for him in Branson. In fact I think my dad was the last steel guitarist that Box had. Wasn't very long after my dad got sick that ol Box went down too.

If there was ever a "Harlan Howard" playing steel it wasn't the one who was married to Jan Howard; that would have been the late great songwriter.
I played a handful of gigs with "The Box" myself over 20 years ago, at a few fairs in California... It was fun! |

Howdy Pete!
I played fiddle on several "demo" sessions with Box in the Dallas area back around 1976-77. I know that several of those tapes made it onto Box's records although sometimes the musicians weren't credited. Those sessions had Junior Knight (and probably Gary Hogue on some) playing steel (the memory is a little foggy) so those two musicians could qualify as being called "Box Car" steel players.

Hey Pete, I think it was Harlan Powell..Harlan Howard was to good of a song writer to be a steel player..haha

| Well I had the pleasure of working with Box Car in 1983-1984 and at that time we only had David Russell on fiddle and Timmy and Tommy Logan on bass and drums no lead guitar what a dream job just steel and fiddle it was great pure country music. That was the first time I got to meet maurice anderson when we played the Texas state fair that was cool! And by the way we only played 265 dates in 1983 and 271 in 1984 that was shows not days off but it was fun. thanks Chubby Howard p.s. Thanks Brett Day for remembering. | Wow, what a thread. Ok, my next question is where can I find the tabs from these great steel players. I have recordings of Boxcar singing Good Hearted Woman, Louisiana Saturday Night, Smoke Smoke Smoke, Red River Valley, Honky Tonk Blues, and so on. The steel on these songs I have listened too is sweet and soulful. Nice beutiful harmonies. I'm new to this instrument and would love to learn these licks first. Should I post this on the tab thread. |

| In the mid-70's, I fronted the house band at a little joint in Euless, Tx (between Dallas/FW) called the Sip & Nip. Box got started there and used to do solo up in the corner before we went on. Then, later when his popularity grew, we would back him up with a full band. We were pretty green, and Box ran the stage with an iron hand. He made it clear that he could do this with or without a band. And he could too! I'll never forget one night we were going to surprise him by playing "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", with all the pretty passing chords that I had learned from Hank Wilson's (Leaon Russel) arrangent. The look on his face during the song was priceless. After the song was finished, he informed me that "there are no G** D*** minor chords in that song", and he was fixin' to stick the drummer's sticks up his a$$. HaHa. He was a trip. He actually taught me how to do the train whistle sound with my voice. I still do it today when we play OBS. He was a great entertainer. RIP Lecil Martin. |

| I also had the opportunity to play with Box Car during the late 70's with a group called Kross Kuntry. We backed him for several Christmas parties in Southern Oklahoma. He was all business and he did have his head on straight. He was a pleasure to work with. |

Since someone has mentioned Timmy & Tommy Logan their father, G.W. Logan is an outstanding bass player who I had the pleasure of working with for 8 years.
Timmy & Tommy were a couple talented musicians. |

Chris S. is telling it like it is guys, There was NO jamming with Box on the stage, you played the melody or you didn't play. 
I played a lot of gigs at The Sip and Nip with Box, Wynn Stewart, Kenny Serratt and others in late '77/early '78.

| In 1980 I think it was, I booked the Box in my club (Nashville South) in Okc. All he brought with him was a guitar player and I'm sorry I can't remember his name. The band and I backed him. He loved my steel man ( the late Doug Campbell). I learned right then that he loved the steel guitar.I thought he was a special man and so fun to work with. The only strict thing he said was to the crowd. Please don't grab my hat(the one with all the pins) He said,this old hat and I have traveled many miles and I don't want anything to happen to it.
