Heres a little tale you kukui nuts may enjoy. Yrs ago I had a Haw combo,a singer/rhythem guitar, ukelele, stand up bass,and me on steel. The owner of this luscious polynesian club questioned me about haw/hapahahaole music and was satisfied with my resume; he did not question me about the other fellows as I guess he assumed they had backgrounds in Haw music also. They were actually fellow members of a west sw band that I had taught haw tunes too. The bandstand had a waterfall flowing over real lava rocks in back of us and the tropical plants were beautiful. I told the singer who fronted the band not to take requests or to tell the guy we would try but we had so many ahead of him we might not get to it. Things went along real well for about three months and I looked up and here came this goatroper with his stetson, boots with a riding heel, tight jeans and a four inch belt buckle. Before I could warn the singer this guy says 'I haven't heard a Bob Wills song all night". The singer says we have a request for a Bob Wills song and immediately went into "My lifes been a pleasure". I looked over where the owner usually sat and he had his thumb up and motioning for us to get out. That was the end of a good gig. CC

Haha--I guess he thought he'd found his needle in a haystack. Oh well...

"You can take the girl out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the girl" or something like that, or "You can take the musician out of Texas, but you can't take the Texas out of the musician."

Sorta reminds me of the time we were in Waikiki enjoying Pua Almeida's great group at the Moana Lanai, (where "Hawai'i Calls" was born). Pua was playing such great music, filling requests when this slob came up and hollared, "Hey, can't you guys play a polka?"
Pua just carried on even though this idiot kept making a real nuisance of himself.

I was wondering what fertility drugs had to do with steel guitars ...

Then I put on my glasses ...

Silly me ... it's goatropin ... not gonadotropin

Carry on ...

this happened to Jerry Byrd w/Benny Kalama/kalani fernandez in th Surf Room of the Royal( the mother church) They were playing all the Hawaiian melodies when a japanese tourist came up to Jerry and said" Do you know Steel gootah lag". Jerry said "do you mean this one and whistled 4 bars. The guy said yeah thats it. Jerry said no we don't know it. CC My youngest son was in a rock band, the screaming guitars, the wall of Marshall amps, long hair, etc; and this 50ish guy came up and wanted to hear "The waltz you saved for me" I don't believe his request was played.

Inappropriate requests are a fact of musician life.

I once saw this "no-occassion" card at the drug store. The new bride and groom were dancing the solitary waltz in front of a easy listening combo and meanwhile this jackass is wearing his tie like a headband and holding his lighter up while yelling, "Free Bird!! Free Bird!!"

The caption was, "Why a Hosted Bar Isn't Always the Best Idea."

I was playing rythm in a country band at a bar in 1950, and this guy comes up to ask me about a request (I thought), and when I leaned down to listen to him he tried to pour his beer into my National flat-top. He never did tell me what he wanted to hear.

So let me see if I got this right;

cowropin = cowboy

goatropin = goatboy?

gonadropin = ballboy?
