Thought you all might enjoy this photo that was taken in 1967 in Bakersfield.

Left to right oyle Holly, Don Rich, Buck and Tom Brumley. Sorry Willie Cantu can't be seen. Anyone know what steel Tom was playing playing?

And yes he played Together Again that day.

Daryl, I believe that's a first generation ZB made by Zane Beck. The keyheads and the decal on the front apron are dead give aways.

Keep on pickin'!

Yes, Tom played the ZB that the late Zane Beck built for him.

The story goes that when Buck first heard it, he said, "That's the best sounding thing, I have ever heard!"

A lot of steelers played Zane's steels; both the ZBs and the BMIs. I play a 14 string BMI and it's the best steel I've ever had. BMI's and ZBs weren't for everyone. But everyone I ever heard play them, sure sounded great.

Some that played them at one time or other included these great steelers:

Wally Murphy, Tom Brumley, Herb Remington, Julian THarpe, Speedy West, Norm Hamlett, Randy Beavers, Zane King, Robbie Turner, Zane Beck and many others.

I sure miss Zane, Julian and Speedy, they were all my friends.

GOD bless you all!

I agree, that looks like a ZB. I talked to Tom at length about one of his early ZB's. He was really high on them. And the tone he got was superb. Then I imagine that would be the case on any guitar he played.

I know the tone fit Buck's voice like a custom made glove. Zane had a number of protege's and of course Randy Beavers was one of them. So was Blake Foughrouse (SP). Any one know what ever happened to Blake? He used to appear with Zane on the stage at Scotty's at the ole Chase Park Plaza in the 70's.

Carl, I think Blake is still living in Rogers, Arkansas working for a corporation and is working in his Church in some capacity. He is a great guy and a great player.

One thing ya gotta say for ol' Buck...he had the boys dressed to the max in those days.

Those rubber-like suits, covered in rhinestones they used to wear looked pretty good, but they were HOT! I'd bet Tom might have a comment on that.

I was gonna mentioned all the names for nostalgic reasons. But what the heck, so ignor the title of this article.

Between listening to Tom and working with Norm Hamlet, playing everyday, I was bound and determined to get me a steel and try and learn to play it. Boy what a hoot! I'm loving it.

Now if I could only play it! hahaha

If that photo were pulled back a bit and panned to the right some, Norm Hamlet's old steel would be seen sitting there.

We walked off the set and Buck and the guy's walked on and plugged into our amps (Fender of course for that Bakersfield Sound.)

Here's a couple more photos....

Check out Norm Hamlet's PSG. His good steel was in his car waiting, for

a night of action at "Tex's Barrel House" each night (6 night's a week).
He went to work for Merle 2 years later.

Now for some fun who is this gal, and the

guy in the coveralls? Notice Jack Ansiel's

old stand up steel...no pedals and Jack could

play the heck out of it!

By the way the left handed fiddle player is Joe Holly

from Bob Wills Playboys band. Bob retired in Fresno,

so Joe and Tommy Duncan went to work for Dad.

Hope ya don't mind seeing this old stuff.

Ricky, I don't think that's Wynn Stewart. Wynn was raised here in MO just about 50 miles from my hometown. He was a great singer.

Speedy West was also raised on a farm about 10 miles west of where I teach school. Speedy was great guy and steel innovator. He had two BMIs one was willed to his last surviving son Gary "Speedy West" Jr. and the other to Scotty for the Steel Guitar Hall of fame Museum someday. Speedy told me that.

Tom Brumley and the Brumley's are also good old Missouri boys and girls. The Brumleys were all musically talented.

GOD bless you all!

I'm guessing the girl on the second photo is Jean Shepard. Awhile back, Norm Hamlet was telling me that he and Jean Shepard actually had a country music class at Visalia High School they formed with some other folks. This was in lieu of the traditional school band. The band teacher didn't know anything about country music so he let them run their own class. Norm, if you're off tour and back home and looking in will you elaborate some more?

Yeah that's Jean Shepard alright. Back in 1955 or so. You're gonna choke if ya don't know the old boy in the coveralls.

Looks like Norm just got off tour end of May and has a month at home. By the way Norm, I got my new CD to send to you, you need to answer your email.

that's johnny russell in the coveralls.

that's dave stogner sitting on the stool in the first pic.

this was an absolutely roaring band in the 50s and early 60s in the san joaquin valley.

the LP they did for Decca stands as the best western swing LP ever done for my money. dave does some cracking versions of some of milton brown's songs and my favorite version of "when my dreamboat comes home". i talked to dave once about jack ansiel, and as i recall he said that jack was in madera. what a great swinging sound he had on that LP!! i wonder if he is still around and if he recorded other than with dave??

can you fill us in about jack, daryl??

Mitch,

Jack Ansiel is living in Fresno and is in his 70's. He retired a couple of years ago. He told me there just isn't much country playing jobs in Fresno anymore, or he'd have kept playing.

Still the nicest guy around. I grew up on the stage watching Jack play, even then wondering how he could do all that on that thing.

I re-recorded several of the songs from the Decca band from the 50's, and yup, "Yes Sir" from Milton Browne is on my CD too.

It was quite a hoot doing several of Dad's old recordings. That was the most fun we'd had in a long time. Even got Smiley to play on the album, and this time it actually sounded like he was playing steel. hahahah!

(Note to Smiley: Your shameless plug for the CD was appreciated.)

OK here's the last one for this thread...

Better look at Jack's steel in the 50's. And the guitar player on the left has already been mentioned up above, Al Brumley Jr.

Almost forgot to mention the bass player is Bruce Pillow. Bruce was actually as good of a steel player as Jack. But Dad had two bands going at one time, Jack in one band, Bruce in the other. Sometimes the two bands meshed for the TV/Radio shows.

Kay Adams lives in Nashville now. I don't think she's singing much though? I was hoping to get in contact with her, as it's be 30 years since I last worked with her.

Sweet gal and a looker too!

OK here's the absolute last one dealing with steel players. Ya have to be able to go way back in the 50's to know this guy.

Left Frizzell on the left, Dave Stogner on the right. The steel player is in the middle. Don't ask me his real name, but he was known as "Carrot Top". Anyone know his real name, I forget?

His shirt kinda gives him away with the carrots on it. Boy loved those show clothes!
