Not being old enough to know from first hand experience and going at this in a retro semi musicological manner I am trying to sort out for my own gratification just who played what when with Buck... I pretty much know Tom Brumley when I hear him (but he fools me sometimes), and most times Mooney is easy for me to pick out... but with his apparent chameleon like way of copping Mooney's style I have a hard time saying "that's Jay McDonald on this cut"

so I would like to be sure who is playing on "Storm of Love"... Moon or Mac?

"there is no such thing as a stupid question"... yeah, right....

That's Mooney on "Storm of Love". To my ear he is the most easily recognizable of Buck's steel players. Not as smooth as Brumley or Mac and he's got that sharp Fender 1000 tone. Love that West Coast country sound!

Lest we forget JayDee Maness after Tom left Buck.

JayDee, like Dan Dougmore (and others), are truly the unsung heroes of our beloved instrument. If anyone thinks these lads can't cut it, don't ever put yourself in the terrible position of having them proving it to you.

If you doubt this, beg, borrow or buy JD's break on "Hello Trouble". It absolutely blows me away. (Note: If anyone would email me how to post a "real player" clip, I will post it to this thread for all to hear this unbelievable break on the subject song by JD.)

So count JD in as one of the all time greats to back up that incredible era that Buck Owens carved in our musical genre'

Tim: I am glad that you (or someone) has confirmed that it was Mooney on "Storm Of Love." I have heard someone give credit to Tom Brumley..although I really thought it was Mooney. I can see how one might think this as since that song comes from that "my Heart Skips A Beat' album? Didn't Tom play on most of those cuts? Or could I be misstaken about this?

then that would be Jay Dee with Desert Rose Band... undeniably a great solo, but at least 20+ years on from the time I was asking about.

T'was Brumley on the original Buckaroos' version was it not? Also a great solo in it's own right.

somewhere on the web a while back (2 years maybe) I found a remarkable spreadsheet style breakdown of who-played-what on Buckaroos recordings... I lost the link and have never found it again... Google has been little help...

Dave:
You're right about the time line for JD. This pic was taken at the arena where I work on April 10, 1969.

You are correct Dave,

Sorry I was not suggesting that recording was made while JD was with Buck. Just demonstrating his awesome talents.

Dave,
Do you own the Rhino records released Buck Owens box set? It's got great photos and it tells who's playing on each cut. Definitely a must have for any Bucknut!
