I had posted some time back looking for a mint copy of the album 'It's The First Time.'
I have found one and it is in the process of being digitally mixed and, hopefully, we will have some CD's by the time of the MIchigan steel guitar show.
It's The First Time was a concept of mine that I conceived in the seventies. I did find a backer for the album and around the same time bacame friends with Jimmy Bryant.
Without Jimmy's help in getting some of the musicians together, the album probably never would have been recorded.
All of the pickers on the album gave Jimmy his due respect.
Johnny Gore and I also became friends in Nashville about the same time so I decided to put Johnny on the album also.
Julian Tharpe, Jimmy Day, Speedy West, Buddy Emmons, Hal Rugg, Mauriece Anderson, Curly Chalker, Lloyd Green and Doug Jernigan were the steel players. They were backed by a great rhythm section which include the great Louis Bellson, jazz drummer from the west coast and married to Pearl Bailey, Henry Strylectki, one of Nashville's best on the bass, the great Jimmy Bryant on guitar and Johnny Gore.
As I was talking to the owner of the company that pressed the albums, he suggested that we just use the time card on the front of the album which would really tell the story.
The title, 'It's The First Time,' I used because it was the first time for something like this to be recorded.
It was the first recording done in Harold Shedd's new studion right across the road from the old Hall Of Fame Motel which is now a Motel 8 or something. Some of you might know that Harold was Alabama's long time producer and I believe, still is.
That night in that studio was unbelievable.
We had a bar set up with much good food and it was a great time for everyone. Phil Baugh was there and told me that it was the best time that he could ever remember having.
Oh, if only video tape had been invented to capture those moments.
I still have two more songs in the can. One of them being Faded Love. Julian Tharpe kicked that one off and any of you that knew Julian can well imagine how it set the tone for those that followed.
Lloyd Green sent chills up my spine as I stood behind the sound engineer listening to the live recording.
No over dubbing....Straight out jam.
Thanks,
Dave Burley
