Dumb as I am, I always related "music studio"
to the place you go to cut records....but from here on the Forum, I hear constant referrals to going to "the studio" just to practice, jam, and/or whatever else.
I have only a music room that the wife dubbed "Ray's Rickenbacher Haven" devoted to steel guitars and all of my stereo eqipment where I play all of my favorite records, tapes and CD's (as loud as I want). It measures only about 14.5 by 22.5 feet, has 4 windows, two doors, a daveno, love seat, over-stuffed chair and fortunately, great accoustics. The walls are adorned with four poster boards displaying photo's of my favorite steel players and c/w music celebrities.
WHAT MORE DO I NEED in order to get up to speed with the real pickers?

Ray, as far as I can tell, you don't need anything else. 17 years ago, when I had the energy for such things, I started building a studio for myself. It took two years. My dream was to have a recording studio and a workshop/machine shop/welding shop, and that's what I have. It's a little more "white trashy" than I had envisioned, but it's here.
When I close the door of the studio, time stops and the world goes away. It is my Sanctum Sanctorum. The function of a studio is to provide one's self the ability to work on/with music,( writing, recording, rehearsing, listening ), whatever it is that you want to do, so to that end, it appears that you have succeeded, congratulations, you're there. |

Of course now it's semi affordable to convert any corner table top in any room into a high quality professional multi-track recording "studio". As little as 10 years ago, this was not really possible. |

The walls of Chas's studio provide more protection and isolation than Saddam Hussein's bunker. It cannot be breached by nuclear attack nor by interplanetary invasion. In fact, as long as Chas remains unmarried, it will withstand any force known to man. |

Thanx guys! Perhaps I'm closer than I tho't.
Years ago, I purchased a Roberts reel to reel, sound on sound, tape recorder, with plans to make some multiple recordings since I've never been able to find a rythm guitar player that wanted to play as much as myself.
After laying down the first couple of tracks, the then-wife hollared down that if I didn't come to supper NOW....it would be cold.
Ruined my project. Broke my heart and discouraged me to the point I just can't get my feet out of the concrete to try again.
With Band in the Box.....and a new Dell 8200.......I guess I don't need a lot more? |

Ray, I have about the same setup as you. But to satisfy my old ego, I call it a music studio. My wife still refurs to it as a storage room or spare bed room. (Sigh). |

I think of a "music studio" as a place dedicated to music lessons, practice and rehearsal. A "recording studio" is where you record. That's very different.
Also, I tend to think that "studio" implies a room with a separate entrance. My converted dining room with it's open entry on the foyer doesn't quite fit the bill.

You could think of the rest of the house as being ancillary rooms and space. |

Good point. My music room is right next to the front door. The rest of the building is Mrs. Lee's apartment.
You know you're spending too much time in the music room when the wife comes in and asks "When are you coming to bed?"
