last Saturday I had the privilege of hearing our fellow forumite Doug "ernest Bovine" Livingston play. The band consisted of a vocalist, a bassist and drummer, and Doug. No guitar. Doug played every riff, fill, and solo.
It was amazing. Doug is one of the most accomplished (and underrated) players I've ever heard. He and J.D, Maness are the 2 top session steelers in L.A. and there is a reason why he has risen to that position.
I was awestruck at how good he is, and I definatley picked up a few things from watching and listening to him.
As far as I know, Doug has never recorded a CD of his own music, or played at a steel guitar show. That is a real shame. I hope that this changes soon. |

Yeah, but he gets an ugly tone.
Seriously, Doug is one of the top players on the west coast. We've met, but I've never seen him play - I've only heard him on records and TV. As Mike said, he's one of the "top 2" when it comes to sessions in Los Angeles. He's a monster player!
Here's a page with his tunings and a short bio:

Thanks for the nice words, Mike. Like most of us, I am accustomed to playing to an empty house with nobody listening. So having all those steel players there I was on edge and just could not restrain my natural tendency to overplay. The good thing about the trio is that there is no guitar player to get pissed off at me when I hog the show. (except maybe for you and that that itty bitty little guitar of yours)

Those look like last week's tunings. I'll send you some new ones. |

Besides myself, there were 3 other steel players in the audience. Our fellow forumite Chaz Smith was there with a fellow who I believe is taking lessons from him, as was another fine guitar and steel player named John McDuffie who is not part of this forum. (John and Doug frequently play together.)

Doug is referring to the fact that I sat in with my mandolin for 3 or 4 songs. (I was invited to do so by the drummer, who also plays in my blues rock band.) It was a lot of fun playing with him. |

I also saw EB a year or so ago at Viva Fresh in Burbank.
There's nothing that I can add. He gets a great tone and is a player that is on a level that most of us wish we were at.

Mr. Bovine, I dont often get a chance to hear good players in my area. Burbank not too out of reach. So are you going to be back at Viva Fresh at some point giging regularly or ?
