Dead Telephone on DSL Hookup

Everythng has been fine but now suddenly the phone line coming off the DSL/Tele splitter is dead. Tests straight into the wall jack confirm that the phone and the lines are ok. So it would seem to be the splitter, right?
So, is this a special piece of electronics or is it a simple 1>2 splitter? I'd sooner spend a buck & and half at Radio Shack than deal with Earthlink over this part. But if it's a $20 piece, that's another story.

Depends on what they have. A "standard" splitter (one line to two) can be purchased anywhere - incluidng Wal-Mart.

If you are going from one side directly to the DSL modem and the other side through a filter to a voice telephone I would bet it's a standard splitter.

If they have the voice "filtered" at the demarc box and you don't have to use individual splitters at each voice phone then it may be a special splitter.

I'm a bit confused. Here's what I have:

Two wall jacks in the house.

Earthlink supplied splitter plugged into one jack, direct to modem on one split, inline filter to phone on other.

Inline filter to phone on other, non-computer jack.

-------I might add----what is there to fail in a simple splitter?! Is this known to happen?

Go to Radio Shack and buy a new DSL splitter. Anything can go wrong with any piece of electronic or mechanical equipment, including passive filters. It may even have worn out the contact fingers in the phone jack side.

If you have another voice telephone somewhere in the residence, try the filter from that one and see if it works. That will confirm that the splitter is good/bad.
