I have had both amps and much prefer the Twin Re-issue with the 15 inch speaker. Great tone and reverb! The Steel King was ok, but I just couldn't get the sound I was looking for.

I agree with Dave. If I could only have one amp, I would go with a Fender Twin or Vibrosonic. My second choice would be the Peavey NV 112. I'm luckey to have a Peavey NV112 and a Fender Vibrosonic. I mostly use the Peavey for practice and jams where I don't need a lot of volume. Large rooms where I can't run the steel through the PA, I use the Fender Vibrosonic.
The down side to a tube amp is the weight. It's a bear to lug around. |

| My Session 400 weighs about 65 pounds.......the Twin Custom 15" is also around that weight, isn't it? I don't find the Session too bad weight-wise. My SF Twin was 85 pounds. That was too much. [This message was edited by Chris LeDrew on 02 July 2006 at 10:43 PM.] |

It depends on your needs. I actually like the reissue twins a bit better than my steel king as far as tone goes. ( I prefer the 2/12 model)But the steel king is my amp of choice for my live rig. More headroom, reliable and sounds great. Also I am somewhat brutal to my daily workhorse amps and I have not been able to destroy the steel king.
For recording gigs that don't involve stairs and pay decent I use my 66 showman into a thd 2/12 cab.

I've only briefly played with a Steel King, but IMO it depends on what it's for - at low volume the Steel King sounds far better - the Twin needs to be driven hard before it opens up.
Big live gigs - Twin (I'm another one patial to tubes in most cases). Small jobs or home use? Steel King. |
