I thought this question had been posted before. However, I did a search and was not able to find it. So here goes!
Can you use a stereo amp such as the Stereo Steel combo or DPC-1400 power amp with only one speaker plugged in one side and no speaker plugged in the other side without harming the amp? I thought this was not acceptable with tube amps but I what about solid state? |

Solid state amps are just fine with no load on them  . |

Also, if the amp can be bridged, usually you connect the speaker leads to the +/red banana connector of each channel. Some amps indicate which 1/4" jack to use for bridged operation.

The Mosvalve 962 manual specifically states that it is ok to run thru just one side. It instructs to turn the volume down to 0 on the unused side.
Additional note, specific to this amp---it is 80w per side. Plugging into just the right side switches it to mono 100w operation. |

| I've used my Stereo Steel rig with both speakers, and just one speaker. I've also used it with no speakers and one or both of the XLR outputs. No problems ever. |

| If you run only one speaker with the Stereo Steel amp, you should pull the other wire out of the back of the amp. If you leave it plugged in, the other end of the cable might touch some metal, causing a short which could blow up the amp. |

| Thanks guys for the feedback. I will try the Stereo Steel amp with one side only and I believe I can bridge the DPC1400 amp and will try that also. |

Just remember, when you run most power amps
amps "bridged", you're pumping alotta watts
into that single speaker. So, take it easy! |

| You can use a Peavey solid state amp all day long without a speaker connected as it is thermal protected. |

For the other half of the answer, with a very few exceptions, NEVER operate a tube amp with an open load.

Len, i asked the same question when i started buying equipment. Here is a photo of one of the many many piece's of Carvin gear that i own...it is a Quad 4 channel power amp. When i bought this monster, Carvin told me i could use 1,2,3 or all four channels..JUST AS LONG...as you turn the amp OFF..before you add or change your speaker load! i have more Carvin gear..then any 1 person on the planet! also several of their fine 6 strings..i will post one if anyone would like to see a great guitar...
