Topic: Back side of Evans fet 500 |

Ok, this may be the stupid question of the day but, I recently bought an older model Evans 500 FET LV. In the rear of the amp is a 1/4 in jack that has "out" & another that has "speaker" hand written with a stencil. There is also a knob that has pre-amp stenciled near it. It has no effects loop. What do these do? I turn the knob with preamp and it doesnt seem to change anything. After years of using a Nashville 400 with the effects loop, I am trying to get the best sound out of the Evans. The s/n is 8162 on the Evans. I do know when putting my profex 2 or tubefex in front 1st then going to the amp, I get a roaring type sound in higher volumes, almost as tho I am doubling the pre-amp area. As you can see, I am not well versed in this amp, although I love the sound! Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated.

David, I have an only slightly newer Evans than yours(#8251). The speaker jack is for an added extension speaker. The other jack out is an unbalanced preamp out with the knob being an attenuator for that. I suppose it would best be used with a direct box converting the signal to a low imp XLR line to a board, but I have always just miked the speaker.
My amp has two added jacks for an effects loop in and out. I don't use them. I put my Tubefex mono output directly into input #2 on the front of the amp. Yes, there is a lot of noise, but I have found that by turning the amp volume as low down as possible(1) and using using the master gain to push up the sound(3-4)that I can overcome most of the noise. On stage, the noise is not really a problem. Hope this helps.
They are great sounding old amps and I hope you will share whatever the folks at Evans may suggest to you.

Roger, thanks for the info. I will contact him. John, thanks a lot for the info. I will certainly try the same as you have mentioned. I really like this amp. After using a Nashville 400 for 9 years, I bought the Evans with a JBL and compared when I returned home. GEE! What a difference! I sold the Nashville a short time later. I am just trying to acheive the best from this awesome amp and wasn't sure what the rear panel controls were for. As for the noise, I have also tried lowering the input volume on the tubefex and that seems to help also. Again guys, thanks for the help.

Are you sure you don't have a high voltage Evans? Some hi-volt Evans have a knob on the back panel that is the master volume control. Mine is a hi-volt and the serial number is 8016.

David...my Evans Amps are 1994 models, so I can only tell you that I use the Pre-Amp Out on mine to go to the P/A System, if I don't want to use a mic, since it has a Line Level adjustable Output of up to 1.0 volt. I am not sure of what you have, or if it is the same as mine, but John Buffington would probably be able to tell you. He's a nice guy and so is his son Scott.
Also, if you don't already have a cover for your Evans Amp, and want one with the Evans Logo, you can order one from them for around $30.00 I bought 2 just recently and they are very nice looking. Just thought I'd let you know. |

Harold, yes I am certain it is an LV rather than a HV. I did go back and check. Thanks for keeping me on my toes!
