Hi Gary,
I would not be so brash to say that I have the best effect boxes out there but I think I can give some general assumptions to go on.
1. Some type of pre-amp with a tube function either real or simulated. I am using the Tube Fex right now and am real happy with it. The unit is very flexible and while it won't drastically change the timbre of the guitar, it certainly can warm it up, fatten it up, or thin it out depending on the sound that you are looking for. I am not a big chorus, flange, effect type of guy so I can't really tell you if this unit fits the bill for that.
I do find however that the reverbs on most Peavey products leave something to be desired. I am using a Lexicon MPX-1 although any Lexicon box will do a good job for you. Their reverbs are lush, full and absolutely enhance the sound of a steel guitar in my opinion.
I find my combo of boxes to do the job for me in the limited way that I use them. I still want the STEEL TO SOUND LIKE A STEEL!!!!

| My topic does say YOUR OPINIONS. I'm just wanting to know what most seem to like best. My Profex sounds good, Jimmy Crawfords profex sounded great at St. Louis, some Other people dont seem to like them. We need to make sure everything is hooked up right. If you run a Stereo Steel preAmp with a Profex, Tubefex, or Transtubefex, There is only one way they will sound right. If you dont believe me ask Gerry Walker that builds the Stereo Steel. I spent a lot of time and money to get this right. Because they are both PreAmps. I think he is at stereosteel.com |

A Boss RV-3 is the simplest solution I have found. A little reverb and deley. I use one setting for ballads and one setting for everything else. It fits in my steel seat thereby eliminating carrying around a rackmount unit.
I only pack steel, seat, and amp.
Less is more!  |

| I can go with Pete Burak's reply,a Boss RV-3,or a DD-3 digital delay for a good full sound,and a chorus ,optional of course. It's compact simple to use and light to carry. |

I like my PV ProFex II so much,that I've got two of them. One or studio work,& one for "concert" work.
