My wife and I went to a show in Vancouver this past week end that was billed as an uptown country show. Without a word of a lie, the laser lights, fireworks, clouds of smoke and background noise, pretty much shut down all the vocalists.
What in hell is it with all this? There was so much visual and noise distraction along with all the other crap, that I am positive that no one had any idea what words are being vocalized, or what melody is being played. Or, for that matter, who or what was supposed to be the headliner.
The only instruments that I could recognize above the noise and other stuff were the drummer’s symbols and the screaming guitar. In fact, I am not even sure if it was the guitar or the keyboard that was producing those screeching guitar sounds.
Can this even be called music? Would there even be a place for a steel guitar in any of this?

I know what you mean,Les.Several years back,my wife and I went to a big name star's concert that turned out to be a fireworks and light show, with deafening so-called music, with the artist jumping and screaming like some demon possessed mad man.Five tractor trailer loads of lights, sound equipment,30 or 40 groupies and roadies, and tons of other junk to justify the ticket price.I guess that's why I always loved Conway Twitty,Just him and a band,Great music from beginning to end, dressed like a professional,no stupid jokes and no freak show crap to interfere with the performance. |

All that "schtick" (lasers, lights, smoke, and fireworks) is designed to make the performance "dynamic", "astounding", and generally more memorable for the young people...their minds are truly entranced by such drivel. To me, it's a cross between a video game, a pinball machine, and a fireworks display.
No doubt the recent emphasis on "utility players" is because they've spent so much on the "visual spectacle", they can't afford a couple more musicians. ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/rolleyes.gif) |

They wouldn't be creating that sound if it didn't sell well as music for lots of young people. They buy that sound on recordings, even without the visual stuff. So for them it is music. And we don't get to define what is music for them. One man's noise is another man's music. It's all music to somebody. There's music you like, and music you don't like. But ones own preferences don't set the definition of "music" for anyone else. |

That's why IPods are so popular now. You can just listen to what you want, and tune out all the rest. Forget commercial radio - you'll never find anything of artistic value or integrity there anymore. Sometimes the cream on the top can be sour, so to speak. So why not just turn it off?

There are kinds of music that use noise and I participate in some of them. For the rest of the time, if it doesn't belong there, I can't stand it when it's in there. |

Les...did anyone take off their clothes like janet jackson did? i was once at a heavy metal rock bar once, my first trip there. I was sitting at a table towards the back. It was still loud. But someone..i think, it was a guitar player..hit a high note, i lost my equilibrium, or something to do with my inner ear..i went down, beer, cigarette, table, chair and all....my last trip to a heavy metal bar...... |
