I found it ironic that being a steel guitar instrumental, John Hughey got the shortest solo and no (official) credit .....

John was just part of Vince's band at the time, not a headliner on the show, which btw was "The American Music Shop".

I think Brent Mason was the staff guitarist, though he's no where to be seen on this clip.

Yeah, I saw this AMS episode back when it first came out. It's great, and a reminder of how fine and under-rated a guitarist Vince Gill is - he's with some heavy hitters here, and sounds just great.

I saw a bunch of those live - they taped them over at a small auditorium on the Vanderbilt campus - but unfortunately, not this one.

Ahh... that would be in violation of the internationally-ratified lead-guitars-on-stage limit of 3. Violation could cause severe brownouts of the surrounding area or possibly even a warp of the local space-time continuum.

Barry, I think that it is a tribute to Herb that Remington Ride is such a great instrumental that killer guitar pickers can have at it as the featured players!

What an awesome treat for players who love chicken picken'. John's solo may have been short but he packed a huge WOW factor with what he did. Mark O'Conner(sp?) has got to be one of the top fiddle players in the world.

This performance could have only been better if only two things could have happened, Brent Mason playing a solo and John getting a longer solo break.

I think Brent Mason would have left Danny, Albert, Vince and every guitar player watching with their jaws on the floor...had he received the chance.

Maybe RFD-TV can pick up this series?

The same guy has a clip from the same show of "Liza Jane"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H2ARoH9Q2I

Only steel and fiddle fills, but some great guitar playing.

Naturally, I'd always like to hear more John Hughey, but this was featured as a guitar summit. Of course, Brent would be right at home with these guys.

The drummer is Martin Parker, from Edenton, NC, who was Vince's drummer with that particular band configuration. I believe this clip is from about 93-94.

I think Brent Mason is great, but Danny's nickname was "the Humbler" I don't think there is anybody that could top him.

I found that The sound level on Danny Gattons guitar was such that it was very hard to hear his notes clearly on that show. On the other hand Vinces guitar volume seemed perfect.... anyone else notice this?

Yes, Peter - I noticed that the first time I watched the show when it was on TV, and I couldn't really hear Albert as well either. Often, when they started solos, it took a few seconds before the levels came up enough to really hear them well. Any time I saw Danny, there was never a problem hearing him distinctly, so I assume part of this was an artifact of the production process.

But I think part of this difference is stylistic - Danny didn't usually go with as clean a tone as Vince or Albert have. Each of these guys has a very distinct tone and approach. But Vince does sound great here - it reminds me of "Luxury Liner"-era Albert Lee with Emmylou.

BTW, here's a YouTube link to Danny's ACL show:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tst7viX7WE8

I think this is more like Danny in his element.
