On another thread someone mentioned making a steel guitar intro into a custom ringtone for their cellphone. Can anyone explain how to do this? FWIW, I have Verizon Wireless.

I don't know for sure if it'll work with a Verizon phone...but Yamaha provides a free 'wave/aiff to mmf' utility called "WSC-MA2-SMAF" at:
http://smaf-yamaha.com/tools/downloads.html#wscma2s

There's one for Windows and one for Mac's...pick your favored flavor.

After un-zipping the program, it's extremely simple to use... assuming your intro is in either the wave or aiff file format and is already edited to the desired length ... just drop your file onto a little blue box and it is converted into mmf format for ringtones.
If you need info on how to load the ringtone into your phone, several methods are explained here:

There are some programs that have more features for getting the task done... like "Ring Factory", it specifies that it works with Verizon phones...but you'll have to fork over a little dough to get it.

Best wishes!

Jim, I have a Motorola mobile phone. Motorola has a software and cable package called Mobile Phone Tools ($30 - $50 depending upon where you buy it) that hooks your (compatible) phone to your computer. It allows you to transfer picture and sound files to and from your PC. In my case I recorded a short sound clip from an old album I have, edited it and saved it as a wav file. I then transferred it to my phone. My phone has a procedure to make sound files into ringtones built in. If you have another brand of telephone, the procedure may be different.

No matter what you get to create/modify the sound clips, Verizon charges for their service to load them over the air. Check out BitPim at http://www.bitpim.org/ It's free and open source, and allows you to load and retrieve via a cable. I've used it for a couple of years and it's great!

If your phone is supported by them, it's definitely the way to go. If not, I would be willing to part with DataPilot software that I paid for and don't use anymore.
