I am sure everyone has had the misfortune of hearing an ear splitting band.
Usually it is a rock band (the Who, and a local band the Rumbles come to my mind)
But amazingly the loudest band I ever heard was a local acoustic blue grass band at a local fair.
They were playing into mikes and you could not get within 2 blocks of them!
Truly they were ear splitting.

I bet they weren't that loud, but the pa was distorting big time.
Just a bad sound man, not a bad band.

If the band is too loud on stage
there's not much a sound man can do,
besides tell them to chill A LOT.

I`m fortunate I play with a band that knows how to play at low volumes. Most of our gigs are in small bar rooms, mediocre PA, no sound man, no monitors. 95% of the bands that play he same gig are extremely loud, and these rooms sound horrible under those conditions. in the 30 years I`ve been gigging, I`ve never seen anyone leave the gig because the band wasn`t loud enough. I`ve seen people leave running because the band was too loud.

Playing lounges in Nevada will either teach you to play softly or find a new gig. If a gambler complains about the volume, you turn it down or you're out of there. It can be frustrating because while you're playing the house system is playig elevator music almost as loud as you. Oh well, the pay is good.

It has nothing to do with the band and everything to do with who is running their sound.
