Today I bought the "An Evening With The Dixie Chicks" DVD (this is not the Top Of The Wolrd Tour Concert!) - Man, there's some real hot pickin' and singin' on there!
The girls play every stringed instrument you can think about (fiddle, banjo, dobro, guitar, mandolin) and they really do some neat harmony singing! The whole concert is an acoustic one, tending towards bluegrass. Lloyd Maines is on Dobro, Bryan Sutton on Guitar.
Oh, yes, and the girls are also a treat for your eyes! Living proof that good looks and talent aren't necessarliy contradictive!
Kind Regards, Walter

I am a good American, regardless of my location at the moment.
The actual war is past, they are continuing with their careers.
Lets just put this baby to bed and forget it.
it's that past, it's over,
lets hear no more about it..
PLEASE!!
Election year or not.
Let's stick to the musical/ performance values ONLY.
Or I am SURE this thread will be closed fast.
BACK TO the music,
I would love to see this DVD, I guess because Walter can see it, it is avaialble in region 2 encoding. Cool.
The Chick's are very good for country music. They play country like it still is country and pull from other genres and make it country.
If they can bring young people into the trad/ older country fold there is nothing at all negative to that.
We need more young people liking the older styles so they don't die completely.
Even with some cross over appeal I still think Home is a lovely album.
If this is a DVD of Home I will be more than happy to watch it.[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 28 March 2004 at 03:36 AM.] |

I too think the Chicks are a talented group and although I have never seen them LIVE they probably put on a pretty good show..
the only thing that I would comment on ,hearing them on the radio day after day, month after month, year after year..is ..I am getting "VOICE" tired of Natalies single lead voice on every record.
Yes true, many groups are in the same catagory..one single lead voice..I think that some of the other top acts are falling into the same single lead voice syndrome..
I really liked Rascal Flats when they appeared..now I turn the dial...
I had this conversation with a Nashville Musician friend recently and the comment that came out was this..
A group such as Diamond Rio is a total group.. yes Marty sings the leads all the time, but he is only one part of the package..The band is..the band united..recording, touring..the complete package. It's not about Marty..it's about the band and the songs.
Rascall Flats, The Chicks etc... it's about the singers. The band that tours is just the band that is currently employed by them and there is a difference..
Maybe I'm not being clear..it's not really a dig at the Chicks or the Flats..I just see them as getting a bit boring or reduntant.
I still buy RIO's CD's..wouldn't even consider a Chicks or Flats Cd...
Nuts? maybe..

Good point, Tony.
I admire the DCs for their musical approach, but find that Natalie's voice, good as it is, is a bit wearing after a few tracks. I can't take a whole CD at one sitting!
To give her credit, though, she did a GREAT job singing the 'lead' on a couple of James Taylor's songs on that CMT 'Crossroads' show; I was impressed!
'Rio' are just marvelous in my view - it's good to hear a real 'Tele' tone so 'out front' on a hit record these days. They're all super players, and I've seen them live a few times now.
RR
PS: I think that Rascal Flatts are quite 'listenable' - did you hear the job they did on 'Star Spangled Banner' on that awful CMT '...in With The Band' a while back? Those guys can sing! |

David, it can be watched in Europe (I think it's even code free) and yes, it has the complete "Home" album plus a few more tunes on it. I bought it at a local store.

Any group or in particular a song can get over played in rotation.
There are some great songs I am glad I hadn't heard in 10 years,
because now when I hear them again,
I am not burnt out on them and realize
why I liked it so much at first.
This also happens to touring bands and in recording sessions.
You hear the song so many times it drives you bats.
And also burns it into your brain so much it NEVER leaves
There are songs I recorded 25 years ago,
and I will wake up at 4 am with the song suddenly in my head, unbidden,
as if I was still mixing it 20 times that same day[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 28 March 2004 at 06:50 AM.] |

Regarding the comment about Natalie doing all the lead singing, does anybody remember the Weavers? Not only did the have different songs performed by each of the 4 singers, they frequently shifted the lead vocals within the tunes. In some cases each verse would be sung by a different member of the group.
I've often wondered why more groups don't do that today. |

I've had that same thought about the DCs, myself. Why don't they feature the other girls on lead vocal sometimes? They obviously have very good voices. Since the lead voice is all Natalie, I kind of see the Chicks as the Diana Ross & the Supremes of country. |

Mike,

In pop music, most of the teenie boy groups (girl groups, as well) do this frequently. In fact, many do it on every song. It gets old just as soon as a single lead voice does. Swing or ballroom orchestras do the same thing with their different lead instruments. It is interesting if used sparingly, but boring if overdone.

Bill, I'm thinking it's just the opposite..the sisters most likley have very good natural harmony voices, as is apparant..but my thought is that Natalie is not the first "3rd" member of this group who is the up front vocal..which means to me that most likely neither sister has the "Lead Voice" for commercial recordings, if they did, we would be hearing them and probably not Natalie at all..keeping in mind that this act is the sisters creation from years gone by..Child stage stars..but children grow up..and their voices change..
If the very musically talented sisters had strong lead voices, and as Mike so correctly stated, we would be hearing them weave thru tunes with 2 voices..but we don't..
I worked behind a young child stage star back in CT for many years, Brenda McGarvey..When she was young, before 13 ..she was really a cool act..her voice fit the scenario..fit the act so to speak..The shows were really fun and packed..But then as she was approaching 14, then 15 then 16..Things changed in a hurry..the cute little gal wasn't cute anymore and that cool little adolecent voice was no longer..she had nothing to fall back on musically, she did not play any Instruments like the Sisters and probably works at Wallmart now.
Kinda like Brooks and Dunne..You hear Kix Brooks on like 1 song on each album..and I don't think he is all that bad of a singer !
just my take..and what do I know, I'm on the couch side of the TV screen...

Well, yeah... but let 'em sing anyway! It's hard to sit at a show and listen to the same voice for 2 hours, no matter what a good voice it is. The ears get weary.
The Marshall Tucker Band had a great singer named Doug Gray (Doug still keeps the 2004 version of the band going), but occasionally Toy would sing one. He wasn't the singer Doug was, but he had a unique voice and I always liked to hear him. In fact, I think he sang "This Old Cowboy," probably my favorite MTB tune. Man, I gotta find some of that stuff on CD... just thinking about it makes me want to hear it again.
And what about John Hiatt? If he can sing lead, anybody can!

Or Randy Newman.
A great songwriter who can deliver his words and play competantly has a chance, even if he isn't a killer voice, but has "style".
That's what John Hiat got know for his songs.
But Bring The Familly had a great band too.
