Just got the new Lucinda album, and it is pretty much on par w/ the downbeat Essence album. What bugged me, is that there was some PSG on the album, but for the life of me, I couldnt find any credits for the PSGer, anyone know?

I am of the same oppinion as you. Carwheels was such an amazing album that I found Essence to be a little bit of a letdown and way too downbeat. As for the new one, I would put it right in the middle between the 2. The production is gorgeous!

The article I had read about how they got the steel sound was pretty intense. they must have ran him thru 4 or 5 amps and then certain di's. the whole process seemed more trouble than what the reviews say also. The reviews agree with you also.

I havn't heard the album, but Gurf Morlix probably played steel and produced it. I think they were married for a while.

Lucinda has really carved out her own niche with this CD - she has left nashville WAYYYYYY behind - I didnt see Charlie Sextons or Bo Ramseys names anywhere in the credits - maybe Im not looking hard enough. PS How could you ever top Car Wheels anyway? If she did I probably couldnt handle it....best album of the last twenty years IMO

I don't think Gurf has much to do with Lucinda anymore. He was the first of many producers on Carweels and they parted in mid-project. Then she recut the whole album with Steve Earl as producer, and then recut more of it with someone else producing. I don't think that her and Gruf have spoken since then.

Ok you guys sound informed then - can someone clue me in on who is this guitar-playing "drunken angel" she is always alluding to in her music?

I know that Doug Pettibone plays in her band. He plays an Emmons SD-10 with a Twin Reverb live with her. I just saw her on the taping of "Sound Stage" here in Chicago. He only played his Emmons on 1 song, but he plays the hell out of his guitars! Here is his website.

I think he did play the steel on her new record.

I agree, carwheels was much better than essence! I don't like the way Ethan Johns produces. -Derek

I bought it the other day. I like it a lot. For tone freaks like me, the guitar work is great. Where PSG appears, it's up front and the tone is fat and beautiful. As I was listening to it driving around yesterday, the thought crossed my mind about how she'd sound with J.J. Cale producing her. I think it would be an interesting mix.
