The Atlantic Steel Guitar Club, in Fall River, Nova Scotia, Canada, is presenting "An Evening With Kayton Roberts" on Sunday evening, 17 August 2003. Kayton will be accompanied by Iva Lee Roberts,and Roger Carroll. Also preforming will be Tex Emery, who played for five years with Don Ho, also with Hank Thomson and Many others.

Sorry, we have no plan to record the goings on -- likely all kinds of hastles with BMI, ASCAP,CAPAC, AFofM, ET AL, especially if we tried to distrute tapes.

How about a "live" internet broadcast?
I don't know much about the legal hassles and red-tape mumbo jumbos with the music companies, but someone once told me that record companies can only impede with recorded music...that "live" was out of their bounds...
It would be really great to have it live for the whole world to see and hear what steel guitar is all about, from the greatest steel player in the world!
Kayton is a wizard when it comes to C6th/A7th.

| Thank you Jeff, all those capital lettered conglomerations that Charlie mentioned outta be flushed. This is America damn it! All these big $/power low life are pushing us remaining good guys into total submission. That's the opposite of what I thot this country is about, or at least was. Sorry to rant, but this situation is disgustingly out of hand! |

Hi JEff:
You mentioned Kayton's tunings -- that may open up a whole new line. I'm sure he uses many, depending on the situation BUT last time he(they) was here 90% or more of what he did was on C6th with a little bit of a twist -- his 8th string was a low A, a full octave lower than the 7th.
His front neck was tuned to an E6th at the time -- it also had a low 8th I think!
I WILL get an up-date for those who are intested. He says he doesn't beleive in trying to keep secrets of that kind.

Believe it or not, he actually only uses two..
Cth/A7th: ECAGEC#AA
The bottom A is an octave lower (I use a .068 gage)
His second tuning is: FDAFGEbCF
He uses this one to get various runs and fills.
He is an amazing steel guitar player. He can jam up there at lightening speed with Hank III, or soothe you to the sweetest Hawaiian melody you can think of.
He does a lot of string pulling. He can get some awesome "pedal" sounds, too!

He sometimes will drop the G string on his C6 tuning down to F#, making it a D9th tuning. That is the tuning "Kayton's Rag" is in.
Though he now uses a .070w for his bass A string, all his old recordings and performances with Hank Snow where done with a .068w. I like that better because it makes less bar noise and gets in the way less. A .066w feels real good, but sounds real floppy, and doesn't hold pitch well under the weight of the bar. |

Hi Ron:
For better of worse, Nova Scotia is NOT yet part of "America" -- we do have our own laws to content with as well as yours in a lot of cases.
However, there may be a CHANCE that there may be some taping going on -- NEITHER THE "CLUB" NOR I WILL BE INVOLVED. It seems that Kayton, and the other performers have all indicated that they have no objection.
IF thoes doing the taping wish to make them available on a very limited basis, I will post their names, addresses, etc. |

Ron: No offense was taken, no appology was necessary but THANK YOU!
I have been told that there will be NO VIDEO record of the event -- sadly. The only audio recording will be of a very amature nature (a guy sitting in the corner with a "blaster" and a bunch of cassettes, hopeing for a half-decent mix.) If any such recording takes place, and if the person doing it agrees; I will post his name and address.

Hi Keith: I will send you a more private report, do you prefer Hotmail or Sympatico?
I guess the term is "Artistic Success"!
It was recorded, the quality has yet to be checked, or at least reported on to me. When I get the go ahead, I will post the recorder's address.
The recording was done with one mic (apeared to be an SM-57) into a small digital mixer that records directly to CD.
As for the ART: Kayton was Kayton. When he and Tex Emery were both playing, they seemed to be holding back -- of course it was their first time -- even at that, they did some very tasty stuff, most Hawaiian!
Tex packed up early, and when he was gone, Kayton seemed to really cut loose -- a little more relaxed.
