Hi to all Forum members:
This time I'd like to say how much I admire this fantastic singer. Although I'm way too young (30) to saw him live his singing became a part of my live ever since I bought my first record.
I don't think that there's another country singer (maybe except George Jones) that have such a unique, influential style.
I often tried so hard to copy him even if I play and sing in a Rockabilly band.
His voice and songs really touches my heart.

You're so right!!!!!
What a great vocal stylist. So simple, yet complex. Merle Hagard is as close to him as anyone else I had heard.......until last month. While at a bluegrass festival in Plymouth Calif, I met a guy named Fred Devore. He knew every Hank, Lefty, Merle, Dwight tune and,WOW, could he do the Lefty. We played and sang together from 10 O'clock Saturday night until 6:30 Sunday Morning. My banjo wasn't quite as soulful as my Steel would have been, but man what a night. He might stop by on his way south and spend some time here in Lake County. Too fun!!!

absolutely, Lefty's "love you a thousand ways" is in my book one of the top songs of all time in classic country tradition.....

I love the song that Lefty sang called watermellon time in Georgia.
It is the same kind of song that the Hag would sing.
It has some nice steel work in it,possibly Llyod Green.

| Well Andy this will make you happy because one of the songs on my new CD is a Lefty song called "I NEVER GO AROUND MIRRORS". That was suppose to be a secret but the cat is out of the bag now. When it is finished I will let you know. |

Interesting choice Rusty! Man, there ain't no way to describe how much pleasure and inspiration Lefty Frizzell's music has brought me over the years. Tele, The Bear Family Boxed set "Life's Like Poetry", is great for listening and the book is very informative! I think Keith Whitley was the last artist to really tap into this well of music that I call, "Lefty's Style"! I think Lefty was occassionaly called "Pedal Throat"---How Appropriate!

I worked one show w/ Lefty,back in '66 or '67 in Vineland,N.J. We had to back him,'cause he didn't carry a band. Whatta kick that was. I've recently done some "demos" w/ his son Crockett Frizzell. We did one called,"If It Ain't Lefty,It Ain't Right",which Crockett wrote.

Thanks for the info Tele. I have the Keith Whitney version of I Never Go Around Mirrow's.
I know as good as keith performed it,for sure Lefty had bound to put some gut into it.
I hope I can hear Lefty's version one day.
For sure he had a voice.
I had heard somewhere that the BEAN PUSHERS just about robbed Lefty blind?
What ashame.

Hey Tele,
After checking out all the pictures, I was reading an interview of Jakob Dylan (Son of Bob) the lead singer with the Wallflowers in the latest edition of Playboy. He was asked about his favorites and influences and guess what? He cited Lefty Frizzel and the tune "I want to be with you always". Maybe there's some hope for the younger generation of players after all.
