Can someone please explain what Gary Morse does between 1:42 and 1:44 on Dwight Yoakam's song A promise you can't keep (on the Tomorrow's sounds CD)? There are some spooky pedal/string action going on there that I just can't figure out.

Since Gary is one of my favorite players, I'll explain what my take is on this lick. Gary has said that his playing on this album was very influenced by Ralph Mooney, another Steel hero of mine.
This is an MP3 of the lick at 1:42 - 1:44:
It moves from a D to an A. on the E9 neck.
The basics are very simple;
10th fret- pick strings 8, 5, 4 open then AB on/off;
7th fret -pick strings 8, 5, 4 open then AB on/off;
5th fret- pick strings 8, 5, 4 open then AB on/off
The magic is in the timing, and the bar and pick control.
For the entire lick the 5th string is picked just a bit louder that the 4th and 8th strings.
When you get to the 5th fret, you slide into it from about half a fret below, add the pedals slowly, and use plenty of vibrato.
You really have to listen closely to the phrasing. Tab would not do it justice. That's why I posted the sound clip.
Of course the B pedal does nothing, on the strings listed above, but press it anyway. If you accidently hit the 6th string it will still sound good.

If I'd seen Joey's reply I could have saved myself some time, but on closer inspection our versions are a bit different so it gives you more options!
I think my first line is probably closer to the original but when I play it I usually add the 4th string .. just feels better to my ear when I'm playing it.

Joey's comments on the timing are spot on and apply equally to my tab.
hope this helps

Edited to correct extra string in second version. A touch of Old Timer's Syndrome!!

Thanks a lot both of you for taking time to help! It's amazing how many kind and nice forumites that are here all the time ready to help and advice.
(I think I just have to get over and visit the country music belt when I retire not too many years ahead. Hmmm... any hints on where to start?)
Thaks again!

It's late here after 2 am. I'm brain dead. But the string combo's are
10th fret 5 6 8 A pedal only. Rock it on and off.
7th fret strings 5 6 8 A pedal only and 8th string raised 1/2 tone.
Then slide to 5th fret strings 5 6 and 8. pedals A & B
Now slide to the 7th fret. strings 5 6 NO Pedals.And String 8 raised 1/2 step. Then slide this string combo to the 5th fret No Pedals. Hope this helps. [This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 09 September 2005 at 11:34 PM.] |

Bobby;
your suggestions sounds best this far, so you can't be too gone upstairs after all. But now I've listened so much, long and intense to this passage so I feel confused. It's like when I've tuned for hours and nothing sounds good anyway.
I probably need a drink, but the shelf is empty and I don't know any other way to rinse the brain.
Thanks for all suggestions!

Thanks Bobby.
All the above sound like it, but yours sounds most like it,
And thanks Anders for the thought provoking question.
I wonder how much time we collectively put into this three second piece of music. Steelers are are strange breed, and proud of it. |
