Hi,

Just received Stacy Phillip's "Frome the Inside" album on Horse Rock. Only able to give a quick listen to selected excerpts at this time. But judging from the samples I listened to it's a great work.

One thing I really enjoy about the 'duke is his eclectic repertoire. There is an incredible variety of great music on this album--Hawaiian, African, klezmer, French mussette and yes, bluegrasss. Keep it handy for those times when you are in a musical rut. Phillips has plenty of chops--after all, he lives by the axiom: forget about the idea that it's too hard--but is not afraid to play it simple.

Great job 'duke. Kudos. What's next?

Gotta go,

Bob

Furthermore...

After giving the album a good listen I am even more pleased with the 'duke's eclectic repertoire, amazing technical ability, and good taste. Among my personal favorites (today) are: Moana Loa (played slack key style on the acoustic steel), Kenyan Tune (what a great idea!),I'll Be All Smiles Tonight (straight-ahead and tasty, played in A, for a refreshing treatment of this Dobro workhorse),Flambee Montalbannaise (French musette on the reso!), and the Klezmer Medley. But every track is really fine.

Stacy has really opened up the reso frontier here. Why did it take me more than two years to hear this 2000 release?

Stacy's records just keep getting better and better.

For those who enjoy an eclectic mix of great music and are interested in hearing reso played beyond the normal confines, this album is the stuff.

Great job Stacy. I'm savoring this one and looking forward to your next one.

Do you have The Great Dobro Sessions CD, Bob? Stacy's original tune "Last Rose of Autumn" is a tour de force of string pull technique as well as a lovely ballad. He did a jaw-dropping version of Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" on a Canadian release of a few years ago.

Hi Andy,

You bet I have the Great Dobro Sessions album. I thoroughly enjoy Stacy's contributions to that CD, but the music on From the Inside speaks to me more clearly and passionately.

I'm not familiar with the Canadian album. What's the title? Is it in print?

Best,

Bob

It's a duet album with Paul Howard. It may be out of print but Stacy lists it on his website:
http://www.stacyphillips.com/dobrobooks.html

It includes ... Cherokee Shuffle, Sermonette, Last Rose of Autumn, The Wind Cries Mary, Perry Mason Theme, Sleigh Ride, etc.$10.00

Thanks for the tip, Bob. Phillips is a great player whose individual voice always seems to come through, no matter what style he's playing in. I'll check this one out.
Speaking of players with an idiosyncratic approach to steel guitar, has anyone heard Jubilee, the new album by Harry Manx and Kevin Breit? The couple of tracks I heard were quite beautiful. Breit is the king of the guitarslingers in these parts. On his own he often tends to be a bit fusion-heavy for my tastes, but in the right company he's a very soulful player, the perfect foil for someone like Manx. I'll try to get hold of a copy and post my response.

Hi Ian,

The piece by Harry Manx on the Rock Horse lap steel anthology is one of my favorites, and was a total surprise. Previously I knew nothing about him. I'm very interested in hearing more of his soulful music.

By the way, today's high will be about 65. Another day in paradise.

Best,

Bob

"From the Inside" is a killer album- and don't forget Stacy's FANTASTIC contributions to the learning materials commuity with his most excellent instruction books. So much good material and so well presented. Kudos indeed!

Hi Mark--I've been waiting for you to chime in because I knew you had ordered the album. Hope all is well. Don't forget to look me up if you get to Gainesville.

You guys are right on about Stacy's instructional materials. We really are fortunate he's a steel guitarist.

And I really enjoy his sense of humor. His comment about the fast bluegrass number Bucktime: "For the Dobro fanatics out there, it's played in B, sans capo. Big deal." Well, for most mortals it IS a big deal.

The klezmer medley is so cool. We should worry for clarinets.

Best,

Bob
