Aloha I picked up a late model Excel Superb..this one (compared to my others) has a volume, tone controls with a Switch which seems to change the tone a little but I am hoping someone else has this model..There was NO paperwork with this when I bought it so I want to know what the switch is for?? And if I can replace the pickup with a Telonics like my other Excels (2005,2010, 2014) depending on if this stock Excel PU switchable is like a 705?? MAHALO Nui in advance..Larry.

Hi Larry, I have 2015 Excel Superb U12 that also features the volume, tone control and switch. Although mine are mounted on top of the steel instead of the end. Knowing how much variety Mitsuo bakes into his steels, I don’t think we can guarantee they are the same controls. But, on my machine anyway, the switch is essentially a pot bypass. So one position on the switch bypasses the tone and volume control and runs the pickup straight to the output. And the other position brings both the volume and tone pots back into the circuit to allow additional tone shaping before the output. If yours is similar to mine, your bypassed setting will be your brightest and the volume/tone pot engaged setting will be a little darker and rounder. Hope this helps. |
