I use a Quad Cortex and it's really easy to switch between guitar and steel. Press a button to go from steel amp to guitar amp. They are pricey units and definitely have a learning curve, but for me very worth it. I'm sure many here will disagree, but a lot of great players are using modelers these days. _________________ Robert "Mike" Simms

My two current faves are a Twin-Reverb head through a '64 Bassman cab with 2 D-120F's and a combo Milkman PS-300 1-15". I like lots and lots of headroom...
Been able to kludge up six-string and steel through the single-channel Milkman by EQ-ing it for steel and compensating with a GE-7 on the six-string pedalboard.
A Q for all you double-duty guys. Do you hold the 6-string on your lap while sitting at the steel or do you stand up to switch instruments? I stand up. |
I do both, depending on the song. If I'm singing, I usually have to sit down. I don't usually have a second vocal mic set up for standing (yet). Some songs I play both instruments back-n-forth.
Given the choice, I'd stand up whenever possible. I can certainly see how Junior Brown ended up with his Guit-steel contraptions. _________________ Carter Starter, Austin dobro, B/G Bender Telecaster, '75 Twin Reverb, '75 Super Reverb 1x15 |

I have been figuring out my double duty setup as well these past few months. I definitely prefer to just carry one amp.
On my 2-channel pro reverb, I've been running steel on the vibrato/reverb channel, and electric guitar + pedals into the normal, dry channel. I like that they are fully separate, because the EQ needs between my guitar and pedal steel are drastically different (always cutting highs / boosting lows for my steel).
Sometimes I want the option to use my effect pedals with both my pedal steel and electric guitar. So I've also experimented playing both instruments into the same channel, using an AB or ABY pedal. The DOD AB box is passive and built like a tank and cheap. I also have a fender ABY box- it is also passive, and you can optionally use a battery to show an indicator light for whichever channel you're on. They don't seem to impact tone at all. If I go this route, I'll EQ the amp for steel preferences, and just crank the treble on my guitar and dirt pedal to brighten up the tone. Still figuring out what I prefer. _________________ Listen to MJ Lenderman |
