Jeffrey, it's a tube driven buffer with a variable load control. The main purpose is to drive your cables to maintain the sound quality (highs) of the guitar pickup. Because it's a tube device it offers a sweetness to the tone. That said you may not notice a huge difference in tone without it. The Suttle difference may not enhance your tone like you expect. What amplifier are you using? |

I purchased The very 1st Boss 2-12 100 Watt amp when they first came out, because of there reputation with quality Pedals, I loved the fact it came with “Reverb & Delay” it’s actually a pretty good amplifier… _________________ Jeffery S Mercer |

I have a Boss Katana MKII 100 watt as one of my steel amps. It's not bad but not my favorite. Have you used the Boss Tone Studio? I believe one or more forum members have added their settings to the Tone Studio for download. You should try some of those before adding more things in the signal path. I have tweaked mine a good deal after trying several pedals both in front and to the return loop of this amp. None of the additional pedals enhanced the tone for me, including the black box. |

I used Brad's Black Box for years. Best way I have of describing the change in tone... it sounds like your steel does the first day you put on new strings
When I got the Milkman "The Amp", I sold my black box. Using tube driven amps, it seems lessens the impact of the Black Box.... but it is a quality piece of electronics, like all of Brad's products! _________________ Dave Wren

To be honest I think (in my personal opinion) the best amp I’ve heard for Pedal Steel guitars falls between a Fender Twin Reverb And a Webb 6-14E, and again the Fender Deluxe Reverb. _________________ Jeffery S Mercer |

Jeffrey, there is several YouTube videos showing the Katana 100 and pedal steel and they sound fantastic. Leo Grassi uses the Katana and a Stage One pedal steel with Joshua Hedley and it's awesome. Check out the videos then decide. I have a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue and for me I never use it for pedal steel. Not at all a sound or the headroom I desire. My Hot Rod deluxe is much better.
