| We sometimes get a request for a Johny Cash song and I would love to have a go at Ring of fire and playing the trumpet part on steel guitar. Any suggestions on how to get a sound close to that part? |

You might try an Octafuzz. I can't really think of any other effect that would even come close to resembling trumpets. If that doesn't work for you, you might try playing the trumpet parts on Harmonica, I think It'd work nicely.

Play it in the same register as the trumpets, pick hard near the changer, and play the staccato double stops with your best blocking technique. The only effect I would try other than reverb and a short delay might be a graphic eq boost of the midrange. Or maybe slightly change the tone settings on your amp.
The trumpets obviously give that song very few other country hits have ever had. But I think the lick sounds great on steel too. Overdrive or fuzz tone is not going to improve it, imo. |

| If you have a "spare" instrument in the band (a 6 stringer, or fiddle, or ???) do a harmony part with them for the trumpet parts. |

Love the trumpets on that cut. Gives that Tex-Mex feel that artists such as Marty Robbins excelled at.
