Gary P. Nunn will be performing down here in a couple of months.
Any chance he has a steel guitarist in the band these days?

Gary's been doing mostly 4-piece gigs last year. I've played a couple weekends during the summer and fall, but that's all. If he's using another steel player, I'm unaware.

This will be for the annual Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Probably not enough $$$ to bring an extra musician.

Brother Lee, if I was on that gig I would have certainly called you.
Where is the rodeo held? I do fish a couple times a year around Zapata and Roma. Are they anywhere near you?

The RGV Livestock Show & Rodeo is held in Mercedes, central Rio Grande Valley. (Since 1940!)
Roma and Zapata are upriver (right on the Rio Grande River), toward Laredo.

| I saw him somewhat recently in Canadian, TX at the "Canadian River Beach Club" Calf Fry. Sept. 30, 2023 fundraiser for Perryton, TX tornado victims. (Double bill with Tyler Halverson) And yes, he had no steel player. Drums, bass, a guitarist that played very tastefully, and Gary P. Nunn switched between a tele and keyboard. Singing was great too. A class act. |

You got that right. One of my oldest friends and colleagues, Gary P. and I have been making music together, off and on, for 52 (?!?) years.
In June of 1972, Gary crashed on my couch at my home in Hollywood CA and told me "Y'know Herbert, you'd do well in Austin TX.  "

Well, our band opened for Gary P. Nunn at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo yesterday. It was hot, humid, dusty, and windy. (And smelled like livestock!) Perfect South Texas weather!
When we arrived for our set up / sound check, his band members were on stage, finishing up their sound check.
Lucky for me, I got to meet and have several short conversations with their bassist, Steve Layne. (For all he does, Musician is a much better word!)
I wish we had had more time to talk. What a great guy. His acoustic, upright bass sounded fantastic.
He said he has an older S-10 BMI he is learning to play. I'm sure it won't be long before he will be gigging with it!

I love Steve! He's been playing with Gary for decades.
Bass is his wheel house... he also played upright with Jr. Brown for quite awhile, which is saying a lot... and he's also an excellent guitarist.
Steves's been peppering me for info about steel guitars for at least two years; I think he acquired the BMI around July of last year so he's probably coming along quite well by now.

Steve said he would like to get the BMI back in the hands of Don Fritsche, to have it gone through and tweaked.
It would be a semi-easy road trip from Fort Worth over to Don's, in Arkansas. The outcome would most likely be much better than trying to ship it.
The guitar has 5 pedals. He said he wasn't sure what the extra pedals did.
